Every event

The Library records houses. This page records what happened to them, and a few things that happened to nobody in particular but changed everything afterwards.

Every dated fact established while verifying an entry is written here as well as in the entry, so that it can be sorted, counted and read against the rest. 472 events, from 705 to 2027. Each carries a permanent LHL-H code, and the numbering follows the order in which events were recorded rather than their dates — an older event found tomorrow takes the next free code and sorts into place by its year.

Most events belong to a house and carry its code. Fourteen do not, and those are the useful ones: Boulanger opening the first room in Paris to call itself a restaurant in 1765, the Revolution abolishing the guilds in 1789, the first Michelin Guide in 1900, David Mancuso's Loft in 1970. None of them is a house this Library holds. Each is a reason the houses exist.

The shape of the page is honest about its own making. It is thin before 1700 and dense after 1950, because verification reaches recent decades first — acquisitions and closures are documented, foundings often are not. As the earlier Parts go through the same treatment the curve will keep flattening. It has already moved once: the 18th century has gone from eight events to twenty-two.

Every event links to what it names. An event carries the code of the house it belongs to and, where the text names another entry the Library holds, that one too — so the 1930 compilation of The Savoy Cocktail Book points at both Craddock and the Savoy. Codes with a full article go to the article; the rest go to the group or country page that holds the row, so no reference is a dead end.

Where a house dates itself and no source confirms it, the year is marked claimed rather than corrected. Three entries carry that mark.
