Rosewood Hotels & Resorts

Rosewood began in Dallas in 1979 when Caroline Rose Hunt and Rosewood Corporation transformed a private estate into Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek. The house became the blueprint for a brand built around residential character rather than a repeated architectural template. A second era began in 2011, when Rosewood was acquired by Hong Kong-based Rosewood Hotel Group. By August 2026 the collection spans 42 Rosewood destinations.

The brand

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is the ultra-luxury brand within Rosewood Hotel Group, privately owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. Rosewood generally manages rather than owns its hotels: property owners provide the real estate while the group supplies the brand, operating system, design oversight and commercial platform. The model accommodates both inherited landmarks such as The Carlyle and Hôtel de Crillon and purpose-built hotels such as Rosewood Hong Kong.

The portfolio mixes urban hotels, heritage houses, beach resorts, an alpine property and hotels paired with Rosewood Residences. In October 2025 the brand reported 41 operating hotels and resorts; Rosewood Courchevel Le Jardin Alpin opened that December. Current public materials describe 42 one-of-a-kind destinations. Projects in Italy, Greece, Saudi Arabia, China, the Maldives and the Caribbean remain pipeline until opening.

Brand philosophy

Rosewood’s defining doctrine has long been A Sense of Place®: each property should reflect its location rather than reproduce a universal Rosewood look. The Mansion on Turtle Creek supplied the original residential metaphor — a private home opened to guests — still visible in local art, residential interiors and social spaces designed for both travellers and the surrounding community.

In October 2025 Rosewood reframed the philosophy around discovery and connection rather than replacing A Sense of Place. Cultural programming, local makers, art, gastronomy, wellness and destination itineraries became more explicit parts of the system. The Hong Kong-based ownership has supported international growth while allowing properties to remain visually individual.

What distinguishes it

Place before prototype. A Rosewood hotel is not expected to look like the previous one. Paris can be an eighteenth-century palace, Hong Kong a vertical urban estate and Kona Village a landscape of individual hale; consistency is carried more by service and residential atmosphere than by architecture.

Landmarks and new builds coexist. Rosewood can absorb an established icon such as The Carlyle or Hôtel de Crillon without erasing its prior identity, while also creating new reference properties such as Rosewood Hong Kong. The collection therefore reads partly as a curator of existing houses and partly as a developer of new ones.

Residential thinking is structural. The founding hotel began as a private estate, and residences later became a formal part of the business. Rosewood Residences now extends the same service language into ownership, but residences remain distinct enough to have their own LHL entry.

Asia changed the scale. After the 2011 acquisition, Rosewood expanded materially in Greater China and Southeast Asia. Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Luang Prabang made the brand less North American and more genuinely global without abandoning the individual-house model.

Discovery is the new layer. Since the 2025 brand evolution, Rosewood has made cultural access, local creative communities and guided regional journeys more explicit. The brand is moving from a hotel collection with a local-design philosophy toward a broader lifestyle platform built around place.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Rosewood is a weak fit for travellers who want a standardised room product, a large points-based loyalty ecosystem or reassurance that every property will feel almost identical. The collection intentionally varies: The Carlyle, Rosewood Luang Prabang, Rosewood Hong Kong and Kona Village are very different physical experiences. Guests who prefer severe minimalism may also find some historic, residential-style houses too layered.

Signature houses

1979Rosewood Mansion on Turtle CreekDallas, United States
The founding house established the residential model: a private 1920s estate converted into a hotel and restaurant, with the feeling of a lived-in home rather than a purpose-built luxury tower.
2000The Carlyle, A Rosewood HotelNew York, United States
Rosewood’s purchase and management of the Upper East Side landmark proved that the brand could preserve an existing hotel identity rather than overwrite it; The Carlyle remains one of the collection’s clearest examples of inherited character.
2017Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood HotelParis, France
Reopened after a four-year restoration, the Place de la Concorde palace gave Rosewood a major European heritage house and demonstrated how the brand handles protected history, residential interiors and contemporary luxury in the same building.
2019Rosewood Hong KongHong Kong SAR, China
The 413-room harbourfront hotel became the flagship of the post-2011 Asian expansion. Its scale, residences, restaurants, art programme and Asaya concept make it one of the fullest expressions of Rosewood as an urban lifestyle platform.
2022Rosewood São PauloSão Paulo, Brazil
The transformation of the Cidade Matarazzo complex combines a restored maternity building, a new vertical garden tower, Brazilian art and 160 guestrooms and suites, showing Rosewood’s ability to make architecture and local creative culture part of the operating product.

Competitive landscape

Editorial note — History, ownership, philosophy, portfolio and opening chronology checked against official Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and Rosewood Hotel Group materials; reviewed August 2026. Rosewood’s current public materials use a 42-destination collection count; residences and announced pipeline projects are not added separately to the operating hotel count here.
