Leeu Collection

Leeu Collection is the hospitality expression of Analjit Singh's personal relationship with place. What began after a 2010 visit to South Africa's Cape Winelands developed into a tightly edited international portfolio spanning Franschhoek, England's Lake District and Florence. The collection is built around sophisticated escapes rather than a standardised hotel chain.

Why Leeu Matters

The founder's interests are visible in the operating product: gardens are intensely landscaped, art is collected and exhibited, wine is produced through a serious partnership, food is treated as a destination asset and properties are selected for exceptional views and sense of place.

Analjit Singh

Analjit Singh, known as BAS, is an international entrepreneur of Indian origin and the visionary behind Leeu Collection. The Afrikaans word leeu means lion and creates a deliberate link with Singh, whose name also derives from lion.

2010 - Franschhoek

Singh first visited South Africa for the FIFA World Cup in 2010. A journey into the Cape Winelands produced what he describes as a deep sense of belonging and energy in Franschhoek. A planned family home grew into farms, hotels, wine, art and gardens.

Unrivalled Escapes

The current proposition is 'Unrivalled Escapes'. Singh defines the pillars as curated art collections, distinct architecture and design, manicured landscaping, spectacular views, intuitive service and outstanding food and wine.

Sense of Place

Singh explicitly states that there should always be a sense of place wherever guests encounter Leeu Collection. This principle explains why the properties are allowed to remain visually and culturally different.

Current Portfolio

The live official platform identifies five properties: Leeu Estates, Leeu House and Le Quartier Français in Franschhoek; Linthwaite House in the Lake District; and Collegio alla Querce in Florence.

Franschhoek Ecosystem

Franschhoek remains the spiritual heart. The three hotels operate inside one wider ecosystem of vineyard, wine studio, restaurants, spa, galleries, sculpture gardens and landscaped grounds.

Leeu Estates

Leeu Estates is the flagship, currently described as a premium five-star 24-room country house and boutique winery surrounded by vineyards, fynbos, gardens and mountain views.

June 2016 - Leeu Estates Opens

Leeu Estates opened in June 2016 and became the fullest expression of Singh's transformation of historic farms into a hospitality and winemaking destination.

Food at Leeu Estates

La Petite Colombe provides destination fine dining, while The Dining Room increasingly uses seasonal ingredients and produce from the estate's Leeu Locally Grown gardens.

Leeu Spa by Healing Earth

The spa sits among the vineyards and uses the South African Healing Earth brand, giving the flagship a locally grounded holistic wellness layer.

Everard Read at Leeu Estates

The purpose-built gallery and sculpture garden place contemporary Southern African art directly within fynbos and vineyards. A studio and cottage support an artist-residency programme.

Leeu House

Leeu House is the intimate village expression, currently described as an exclusive 12-room hotel and suite on Franschhoek's main street, with secluded gardens and pool.

Le Quartier Français

Le Quartier Français is a longstanding Franschhoek icon. The current master site describes a romantic 25-room hotel and cottage with Protégé, Épice, Everard Read Franschhoek and the Great Heart Wine Boutique.

One Distributed Destination

The three Franschhoek properties work best as one distributed resort: guests can move among food, wine, spa, galleries and gardens while choosing estate or village accommodation.

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines

Analjit Singh is a partner with acclaimed winemakers Andrea and Chris Mullineux. This gives Leeu a wine identity with independent critical credibility rather than a hotel private-label programme.

The Wine Studio

The Wine Studio at Leeu Estates provides immersive tastings of Mullineux and Leeu Passant wines. Wine therefore connects agriculture, collecting, gastronomy and hospitality.

Great Heart Wines

At Le Quartier Français, the Great Heart Wine Boutique introduces a staff-owned wine project initiated by Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, adding another social dimension to the wine ecosystem.

Leeu Art

Singh states that art is as important as food, wine or sense of place. Leeu's Everard Read partnership includes two Franschhoek galleries, sculpture gardens and a year-round exhibition programme.

Leeuscapes

The collection calls its landscaped environments 'Leeuscapes'. Singh's preference for order, symmetry and serenity makes gardens a founder-specific part of the brand.

Leeu Locally Grown

The edible-garden initiative began in 2019 to increase local production and support a healthier, more sustainable food system. Produce from the gardens feeds into restaurant menus.

April 2016 - Linthwaite House

Leeu acquired Linthwaite House in April 2016 as its first property outside South Africa.

Linthwaite History

Built as a private house around 1900, Linthwaite became a guesthouse in 1969 and evolved into a luxury country hotel before joining Leeu.

£10 Million Transformation

Leeu closed Linthwaite House in 2017 for a £10 million renovation, reopening it with more contemporary interiors and expanded public areas.

Thirty-Six Rooms

The current master site describes Linthwaite House as a 36-room country retreat overlooking Windermere.

The Lake District Expression

Water, fells, woodland, wildflower meadows and a private tarn replace vineyards and fynbos, but the Leeu obsessions with views, gardens, art, food and calm remain recognisable.

British Hospitality, Leeu Touch

The strategy was not to make Linthwaite South African. Leeu sought to preserve British country-house hospitality while applying its master pillars.

2017 - Florence Acquisition

Leeu acquired the former Collegio alla Querce in Florence in 2017, its second European property.

Auberge Resorts Collection

In 2021 Leeu appointed Auberge Resorts Collection to manage Collegio alla Querce, deliberately separating asset ownership and founder vision from day-to-day operating brand.

3 March 2025 - Florence Opens

Collegio alla Querce opened on 3 March 2025 as Auberge Resorts Collection's first property in Italy.

Eighty-Three Rooms

The current Leeu Italy page describes an 83-room-and-suite five-star luxury city resort with restaurants, bars, event spaces, spa, pools and extensive gardens.

Former Educational Institution

The sixteenth-century complex served as a centre of learning for more than a century and retains a library, theatre, chapel and layered institutional history.

Florence as City Resort

The property combines views toward Florence's historic centre with gardens and resort-scale amenities, creating a bridge between Renaissance city hotel and Tuscan retreat.

Ownership vs Management

Collegio alla Querce is a Leeu Collection property and an Auberge Resorts Collection hotel. Both identities are essential: Leeu is the owner-curator; Auberge is the operator and consumer-facing hotel brand.

Three Countries, Three Expressions

South Africa is wine, art and founder landscape; the Lake District is British country-house nature; Florence is Renaissance heritage interpreted as a city resort.

Architecture and Design

Distinct architecture and design are formal brand pillars. Leeu seeks strong individual buildings rather than a repeated room package.

Views as Luxury

Spectacular views are explicitly one of Singh's pillars. Mountains, vineyards, Lake Windermere and Florence's skyline are treated as core hospitality assets.

Intuitive Service

The founder describes superlative, intuitive service with attention to the smallest detail. Service should anticipate rather than perform ceremony.

Food as Destination Strategy

Leeu repeatedly works with serious culinary talent. Restaurants are intended to strengthen the destination, not merely support room demand.

Wellness

Wellness is property-specific rather than one global protocol. Healing Earth in Franschhoek is the clearest branded expression.

Sustainability Through Place

The most convincing environmental work appears where it intersects with gardens, local sourcing, vineyards, land stewardship and food production rather than abstract corporate claims.

No Conventional Loyalty Programme

No proprietary Leeu points-and-tiers loyalty programme is identified on the current official platform. The collection relies on direct relationships, repeat guests and property-level recognition.

Comparison with Singita

Both are South African-founded luxury collections with strong landscape and founder vision. Singita is safari- and conservation-led; Leeu is more wine, art, gastronomy and garden-led.

Comparison with The Royal Portfolio

The Royal Portfolio is another owner-authored South African luxury collection with art and distinctive properties. Leeu is more internationally dispersed and structurally connected to wine production.

Comparison with Fontenille Collection

Fontenille also connects hospitality with vineyards, gardens and terroir. Leeu is more intensely founder-authored and uses contemporary art as a stronger master pillar.

Comparison with La Fiermontina

La Fiermontina is organised around family biography and art memory. Leeu is organised around the founder's acquired sense of place, collecting, landscaping and wine.

Comparison with J.K. Place

J.K. Place uses private-residence intimacy and Michele Bönan design as central codes. Leeu is more estate- and landscape-oriented, with wine and monumental art playing larger roles.

Comparison with Auberge Resorts Collection

Auberge is a global luxury operator and brand; Leeu is a small owner-curator. Collegio alla Querce demonstrates that the two can overlap at one asset without becoming the same organisation.

The Advantage of Founder Ownership

Founder ownership allows long-term investment in gardens, art and restoration that may be difficult to justify through short-term hotel economics.

The Risk of Founder Dependence

The collection is unusually tied to Singh's taste in art, gardens, wine and property selection. Long-term durability requires those instincts to become institutional criteria.

The Risk of Partnership Complexity

Restaurants, galleries, wineries, spa brands and Auberge management strengthen the experience but create multiple identities. The guest should still understand what Leeu contributes.

The Risk of Portfolio Heterogeneity

A winery estate, village hotel, British country retreat and Auberge-managed Italian resort can look unrelated unless the master pillars remain visible.

What the Model Does Not Solve

Founder passion does not automatically create a scalable hotel system, beautiful gardens do not guarantee sustainability, and expensive art does not automatically create cultural depth. Leeu succeeds when its partnerships remain substantive and each property converts the founder's interests into a genuine relationship with landscape and community.

What Distinguishes Leeu Collection

FOUNDED AND OWNED BY ANALJIT SINGH, WHOSE 2010 ENCOUNTER WITH FRANSCHHOEK BECAME THE ORIGIN OF THE COLLECTION. FIVE CURRENT PROPERTIES ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA, THE UNITED KINGDOM AND ITALY: LEEU ESTATES, LEEU HOUSE, LE QUARTIER FRANÇAIS, LINTHWAITE HOUSE AND COLLEGIO ALLA QUERCE. ART, DISTINCT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN, LANDSCAPING, SPECTACULAR VIEWS, INTUITIVE SERVICE AND OUTSTANDING FOOD AND WINE AS THE MASTER PILLARS. MULLINEUX & LEEU FAMILY WINES AND EVERARD READ GIVE THE BRAND SUBSTANTIVE WINE AND ART LAYERS.

The Strategic Achievement

Leeu Collection's achievement is to turn one founder's passions into a coherent hospitality ecosystem without making five very different properties look alike. Wine, art, gardens, food and landscape become operating assets rather than marketing themes.

The Hospitality Lesson

The Leeu lesson is that founder-led luxury is most convincing when personal taste becomes infrastructure. A vineyard must produce serious wine, a gallery must support artists, a garden must shape the stay and a view must influence architecture and service.

Editorial Note

LHL records five current Leeu Collection properties as of 22 August 2026 based on the live official portfolio. Collegio alla Querce is Leeu-owned and Auberge-managed; both identities are retained. Current live room counts are used where older Leeu materials show historic inventory differences. No proprietary points-and-tiers loyalty programme was identified.
