1 · Position

Boonchu Rojanastien travelled to health farms in Europe from the 1970s and wanted to bring the idea to Thailand. He demolished his beach house at Hua Hin in 1993 and opened Chiva-Som — *Haven of Life* — in April 1995, at first inviting friends and family, under his own motto: *above all, enjoy life*. It became Asia's first wellness resort.

2 · ⚑ Why the programme is the entry rather than the house

The method has six declared strands — spa, fitness, physiotherapy, holistic health, nutrition and aesthetic beauty — and the guest is assigned a programme against a goal: mindfulness, detox, pain management, weight. The beach and the restaurants are explicitly the supporting cast. One reviewer's observation catches it exactly: at the pool your neighbours are drinking carrot juice rather than cocktails. That inversion — the resort's pleasures subordinated to a course of treatment — is what this group exists to record, and Chiva-Som made it first.

3 · What it produced

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som opened in Qatar in 2022 — LHL-H-485 Zulal Wellness Resort in the register — applying the method through Traditional Arabic Medicine instead. A protocol that can be restated in another medical tradition and still be itself is the strongest evidence in this group that a method, not a place, is the thing.

4 · Candour

⚑ Some of what is offered — iris analysis among it — sits outside evidence-based medicine, and the Library records the treatment list without endorsing it. The founder's own framing was hospitality rather than clinical: he built a retreat and invited his friends. Thirty years of imitators have made the category, and this entry records the origin, not a verdict on the field.
