The Austrian Pilgrim Hospice

The Austrian Pilgrim Hospice opened in Jerusalem in 1863. Its address on the Via Dolorosa placed accommodation within the geography of pilgrimage: a visitor could sleep, pray and begin the day’s journey from the same house. The institution joins a Catholic purpose to the practical work of receiving travellers in the Old City. [1, 2]

2 · AN AUSTRIAN PRESENCE

Founded as an ecclesiastical institution in 1854, the hospice also expressed Austria’s presence in the Holy Land. Emperor Franz Joseph stayed in 1869. Its historical publication situates the foundation among European religious and political rivalries, and records the building’s use for consular occasions. Pilgrim reception and diplomatic representation occupied the same rooms and grounds. [1, 2]

3 · THE HOSPITAL INTERVAL

The building’s identity did not remain fixed. For a long period it served as a hospital for the Old City’s Arab population. The hospice’s own retrospective dates its return to use as a pilgrims’ hostel and cultural institution to 1988. Care continued in the building, but receiving patients and accommodating pilgrims were different activities under different circumstances. [2]

4 · A HOUSE RENEWED

Guest rooms, the chapel and Café Triest now give the institution several points of contact with visitors. Casa Austria opened in April 2019, expanding its accommodation with eleven additional rooms for guests and volunteers. The new wing offered quieter quarters away from the main building. This was a physical extension of the working house, rather than simply the conservation of a historic façade. [1, 3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

An opening in 1863 does not establish uninterrupted operation as a guesthouse. The hospital interval belongs within the account, not outside it. The hospice’s description of itself as Jerusalem’s oldest Christian guesthouse is an institutional claim; its documented history is sufficient to establish significance without turning that superlative into an independently verified record.
