Silencio opened in 2011 in a basement on rue Montmartre, designed by David Lynch and named after the club in his own film.
2 · Why it matters
Every other house in this group commissioned a designer. This one was designed by an author who had already invented the room on screen and then built it, which reverses the usual direction between fiction and hospitality.
The consequence is a club whose interior is the proposition. Gold leaf, a small cinema, a stage, a library — the programme is cultural before it is nocturnal, and members arrive for a screening as readily as for a night.
It sits at the crossing of this group and the private clubs of Group VI, and it is the clearest evidence that a nightclub can be an authored work rather than a venue.
3 · Signature & ritual
Members until midnight, open after; a cinema inside a club; and an interior credited to one named author in a category that normally credits nobody.
4 · What this house does not solve
An authored interior dates with its author. The room is fixed to a 2011 sensibility and cannot be refreshed without destroying the thing being sold.
Membership economics and nightlife economics pull against each other: one wants scarcity, the other wants volume, and the house has to run both in the same evening.
And a basement of that size cannot scale. Its influence will always exceed its revenue.
