Viking

Viking began in 1997 and subsequently extended river cruising into ocean voyages in 2015 and expeditions in 2022. Its distinctive contribution to hospitality is a deliberately limited proposition: a ship organised around the places visited, with fewer of the diversions commonly associated with a floating resort. 1 · POSITION

2 · A PROMISE MADE BY OMISSION

The company’s ocean-cruise policy excludes passengers under eighteen, casinos and formal nights. These choices define the audience and the atmosphere before a guest boards. Removing a casino is a decision about space and revenue; excluding children changes the social composition of the voyage. Neither is an incidental decorative preference. Together they make the absence of certain facilities part of what is being purchased. [2]

3 · KNOWLEDGE AS A SERVICE

The Resident Historian programme gives that positioning a practical form. Lectures and round-table discussions address the history, art, architecture and culture of forthcoming destinations. The lecturer becomes part of the hospitality team’s wider offer: someone who can make the next port more intelligible. Time aboard is used to prepare for arrival, connecting the accommodation to the journey outside it. [3]

4 · ONE IDEA, DIFFERENT WATERS

River vessels, ocean ships and expedition ships operate under different physical constraints. Viking’s expansion placed its destination-led proposition in each of those settings. The continuity lies in the intended character of the journey, rather than identical vessels or interchangeable itineraries. Dates of entry into each category describe successive undertakings; the expedition business did not exist when the company began. [1]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

Viking’s exclusions and educational programmes are documented product choices, not proof that its passengers are more cultivated than other travellers. The account also distinguishes an adult-only ocean offer from a universal definition of luxury. A clear audience can make a product coherent without making it suitable for everyone. [1–3]
