Virgin Limited Edition

Virgin Limited Edition was launched in 2000 as Sir Richard Branson’s collection of exceptional retreats, initially bringing together Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, Ulusaba in South Africa and The Roof Gardens in London, which was later sold. Over the following quarter-century the collection expanded through private islands, safari lodges and camps, wine-country hotels, mountain retreats and Mediterranean estates. By August 2026 Virgin Limited Edition presents nine destination retreats in its official collection, while Ulusaba is temporarily closed for an extensive refurbishment and is scheduled to reopen in April 2027. A second Moroccan retreat near Marrakech is announced for spring 2027.

The brand

Virgin Limited Edition is the ultra-luxury retreat collection founded and owned by Sir Richard Branson and today operated within Virgin Hotels Collection, the parent company that brings together Virgin Limited Edition, Virgin Hotels and Virgin Residences. The collection is intentionally eclectic. It includes Necker Island and The Branson Beach Estate in the British Virgin Islands; Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco; Mahali Mzuri and Finch Hattons in Kenya; Mont Rochelle and Ulusaba in South Africa; Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas in Mallorca; and The Lodge in Verbier.

The portfolio does not depend on a repeatable architectural formula. Its unity comes instead from Branson’s personal selection of places, highly individual settings, informal luxury, friendly service, privacy, experience and a recognisable sense of fun. A private Caribbean island, a Moroccan kasbah, a Maasai Mara tented camp, a South African vineyard hotel and an Alpine lodge can therefore sit within the same collection without being made physically alike.

Brand philosophy

Virgin Limited Edition describes its purpose through exceptional locations, memorable experiences and service that is personal without becoming formal. The wider Virgin values are visible in the hospitality model: staff are encouraged to bring personality to service, guests are cared for through friendly attention and extra touches, and the atmosphere aims to be luxurious without relying on ceremony as its principal language.

Place and experience are central. The collection is built around destinations that are difficult to reproduce: Necker Island’s private-island environment, the wildlife of the Maasai Mara and Tsavo, the Sabi Sand safari landscape, the Atlas Mountains, the vineyards of Franschhoek, Mallorca’s Tramuntana coast and the Alps around Verbier. Sustainability and positive local impact are also presented as part of the operating philosophy, with community and conservation initiatives varying by property.

What distinguishes it

Richard Branson is part of the brand architecture. Virgin Limited Edition is explicitly presented as Sir Richard Branson’s personal collection. Ownership, personality and the Virgin name are unusually visible, giving the retreats a founder-led identity even within the larger Virgin corporate universe.

Extreme variety is intentional. The portfolio moves from an entire private island to safari camps, a vineyard hotel, a Moroccan mountain retreat, an Alpine lodge and a historic Mallorcan finca. The collection is held together by experience and attitude rather than by a standard hotel format.

Informality is a luxury language. Virgin Limited Edition generally avoids stiff ceremony. Friendly service, sociability, freedom and a sense of play are intended to coexist with privacy, high staffing levels and expensive physical settings.

Several properties are destinations in themselves. Necker Island can be hired exclusively; The Branson Beach Estate offers a highly private villa-estate model; safari properties place wildlife at the centre of the stay; and Son Bunyola combines hotel and villa accommodation within a large Mediterranean estate.

Third-party loyalty is unusually broad for an owner collection. Virgin Limited Edition participates in Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, allowing eligible guests to earn and spend Virgin Points. Its properties also joined Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ Legend Collection, with participation in I Prefer Hotel Rewards, creating an additional external loyalty layer.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Virgin Limited Edition is a weak fit for travellers who want a uniform hotel product, a dense global city network or highly formal grand-hotel ritual. The properties differ radically in scale and format, and some experiences are highly destination-specific: safari, private-island living, wine country or Alpine stays. Guests who prefer anonymous corporate luxury may also find the Virgin personality too visible. The collection works best for travellers who value privacy, distinctive locations, informal personal service and experience-led hospitality more than architectural consistency.

Signature houses

Necker IslandBritish Virgin Islands
The best-known property in the collection is Richard Branson’s 74-acre private island. It combines exclusive-use capability with selected individual-stay periods, extensive watersports, beaches, wildlife and a highly social form of barefoot luxury. Necker remains the clearest expression of the collection’s mix of privacy, personality and experience.
Kasbah TamadotAsni, Morocco
Set in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Kasbah Tamadot combines rooms, suites, Berber-style tents and riads with a strong connection to local craft and hospitality. The property gives the collection a culturally rooted North African house rather than a conventional resort interpretation of Morocco.
Mahali MzuriMaasai Mara, Kenya
Mahali Mzuri is the collection’s tented safari camp in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Wildlife viewing, intimate scale and highly personalised hosting make the safari itself the principal product, with accommodation designed to support immersion in the landscape.
Mont RochelleFranschhoek, South Africa
Mont Rochelle is a hotel and vineyard in the Cape Winelands. Wine, food, landscape and relaxed country-house hospitality distinguish it from the collection’s wilderness properties while preserving the same preference for destination-led experience.
2023Son Bunyola Hotel & VillasMallorca, Spain
Son Bunyola occupies a large estate on Mallorca’s northwest coast and combines a historic finca converted into a luxury hotel with three private villas. The estate brought Virgin Limited Edition a substantial Mediterranean resort-and-villa presence when the hotel opened in 2023.
The LodgeVerbier, Switzerland
The Lodge is the collection’s Alpine retreat in Verbier. It is particularly associated with ski-season house-party intimacy, mountain access and private-lodge service, extending the Virgin Limited Edition model into a small-scale European mountain environment.

Competitive landscape

Editorial note — Code and book number checked against the current LHL register. Founding history, ownership context, current nine-retreat collection, Ulusaba’s temporary closure and the announced Marrakech project were checked against official Virgin Limited Edition materials in August 2026. The nine-property portfolio figure follows the brand’s official collection count and includes Ulusaba while it is temporarily closed for refurbishment. Preferred Hotels & Resorts confirmed the collection’s Legend Collection partnership and I Prefer participation; Virgin Limited Edition confirms points earning and redemption through Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, with stated exclusions. Loyalty is therefore recorded as third-party rather than proprietary.

Sources & Further Reading

⚑ He went looking for somewhere to put rock stars. Told in 1978 that islands in the British Virgin Islands were for sale, Branson flew out to look — intending to house artists signed to his record label — was shown properties by helicopter, climbed the hill on the last island of the day, and bought it. Necker is 74 acres. He opened his own home to buyout guests in 2000, which is the date Virgin Limited Edition actually begins; the collection marked twenty-five years in 2026.
⚑ The price is given three ways and the Library carries all of them. One account says $218,000; another says less than $1 million in today’s money; the encyclopaedic account records a lowball opening bid of $100,000 without stating what was finally paid. These are not compatible and the entry does not choose. The collection size is likewise given as eight and as nine retreats depending on which of Virgin’s own pages is read.
⚑ Why this belongs beside Vik and not beside Marriott. Necker is Branson’s official residence and he is often on it while guests are. Like LHL-026 Vik Retreats, the house was a home first and a business second — but where the Viks built theirs, Branson bought an island for an unrelated purpose and arrived at hospitality twenty-two years later. The register holds both because the distinction between building a home and finding one is visible in what the places became.
Candour. Hurricane Irma destroyed most of Necker on 6 September 2017 — Branson said he had never seen anything like it and that the island and the whole area were utterly devastated; most structures were rebuilt by April 2018. A significant fire had preceded it. ⚑ Virgin Limited Edition and Virgin Hotels were brought under a new parent, Virgin Hotels Collection, and the register does not yet carry that parent as an entry. Not established here: the terms of that combination, and the current ownership structure.
⚑ Sources added September 2026, one of 140 entries the Library’s own audit found published without them.
