1 · Opening
Founded in 1858 at Elciego, the oldest bodega in Rioja and among the first in Spain to make wine by the Bordeaux method.
2 · Why it matters
In 2006 it opened a hotel under titanium ribbons by Frank Gehry — the same instrument Bilbao had used a decade earlier, applied to a wine estate in a village of a thousand people.
**The building is the argument.** A bodega in Rioja Alavesa cannot compete with Bordeaux on reputation, so it competed on the one thing money can buy outright, and the hotel is now better known than any bottle the estate makes. Whether that is a triumph or a warning is the question the entry exists to raise.
3 · Signature & ritual
Titanium in pink, gold and silver, echoing the wine, the netting on the bottle and the foil; and a village skyline it does not pretend to respect.
4 · What this house does not solve
The building is divisive in Rioja and has been called a tourist object imposed on a working village. The criticism is not fringe.
The house is a producer that built a hotel, which is route one and route three at once — and it is fair to ask whether the wine or the architect is the house's authorship.
The gold wire netting on the bottle, its oldest mark, was originally an anti-counterfeiting device, not a decoration.
