Contribution to hospitalityThe festival club: a house whose commercial year is decided by two weeks in May

1 · Opening

Bâoli sits on the Port Canto side of Cannes and does most of its business in the days around the film festival.

2 · Why it matters

It is here for its economics rather than its influence. A festival club is the most extreme concentration of demand in hospitality: a year of fixed costs recovered in a fortnight, at prices only that fortnight will bear, from a crowd that will not return in October.

That pattern now governs a whole class of houses — Venice in September, Monaco in May, Art Basel in December — and Cannes is where it is most nakedly visible.

3 · Signature & ritual

Dinner that becomes a club without the guests changing tables, a terrace on the water, and a pricing structure that is openly different in festival week.

4 · What this house does not solve

A house that earns its year in two weeks has no margin for a bad fortnight, and no way to build a regular clientele.

Festival pricing is resented by the city that hosts it and depends on a crowd whose expenses are being paid by someone else.

And the house is weaker than most of this group on its own terms — it is recorded for the model it exemplifies, not for having authored anything.

“A Year In Two Weeks” — Twelve months of rent, staff and stock, recovered in the days when the harbour fills with people whose bills are being paid by a studio.
