Contribution to hospitalityThe historic pâtisserie absorbed by a fashion house — and the contest that produced it

1 · Opening

Prada acquired a majority of Pasticceria Marchesi in 2014. The year before, it had tried to buy Cova and lost it to LVMH.

2 · Why it matters

That sequence is the entry. The register already holds Cova as the first café bought by a luxury conglomerate; Marchesi shows what happened next, which is that the losing bidder went and bought another one. Two historic Milanese counters, two luxury groups, one contest fought twice.

The direction of travel is also the opposite of the rest of this group's fashion entries. Ralph's Coffee, Café Dior and Gucci Osteria are fashion houses creating hospitality. Marchesi is a fashion house acquiring hospitality that is older than it is — 1824 against Prada's 1913.

Prada then did what it does with a maison: kept the interiors, extended the boutique network and opened in London. Culinary heritage entered a luxury group's ecosystem as an asset class.

3 · Signature & ritual

Pistachio-green interiors, a counter that has not been modernised into a café-restaurant, and boxes that carry the date rather than the fashion name.

4 · What this house does not solve

Ownership by a luxury group does not make the model work. Marchesi closed 2022 more than €5m down, with Prada waiving some €8m owed to it — a maison inside a conglomerate can be subsidised for a very long time before anyone calls it a failure.

Expansion is the standing risk in this chapter: a Milanese counter with a London address is a different proposition from a Milanese counter.

And an acquired heritage cannot be earned. The date on the box belongs to people the current owner never met.
