Three pillars, stated by the Foundation itself and matching the resort’s own framing of above, below and beyond: marine conservation — coral rehabilitation, turtle protection and improving how the marine park is managed; community development — alternative livelihoods, vocational training, integrated waste management; and forest conservation — reforestation, a nursery and agro-tourism. Two islands near Bawah were chosen to begin with, in coordination with the Anambas government.
2 · Why it is in the Library
The proportion is the argument. In a district where 75 to 80 per cent of forty-five thousand people live directly from the sea, marine conservation without an alternative livelihood is a policy to make people poorer. The Foundation was built with both halves attached, which is why it works on organic farming and waste management as well as coral, and why it does so through the district government rather than around it.
3 · Candour
Programme figures are the Foundation’s own. Reported work has been modest in scale — hundreds of mangroves planted, shark and marine-debris data collected, classes interrupted by the pandemic — and the entry records a body doing careful local work rather than one operating at the scale of the Grumeti Fund or Wild Impact. Independence from Bawah is stated by both parties; the two operate in parallel and close alignment, which is not the same as at arm’s length.
