1 · POSITION

Walkerhill opened in Seoul in April 1963. Its later history moved through conglomerate ownership, international hotel affiliations and a return to independent hotel names. The enduring Walkerhill identity belongs to the place and its operation across those changes, rather than to a single foreign franchise. [1]

2 · OWNERSHIP AND AFFILIATION

The company’s chronology records an acquisition by SK Group in March 1973 and a Sheraton franchise agreement in July 1978. Those are different transactions: one concerns the enterprise’s ownership, the other the brand under which hospitality was offered. Keeping them separate explains how a Korean business could remain locally controlled while drawing on an international hotel system. [1]

3 · NAMES RETURN TO THE SITE

A W hotel opened in 2004. In 2017, Grand Walkerhill Seoul and Vista Walkerhill Seoul emerged as independent brands, in January and April respectively. The current offer also includes Douglas House. Taken together, these names present several ways to stay within the Walkerhill setting, allowing the established destination to carry the identity previously shared with international chains. [1, 2]

4 · REST MEASURED IN HOURS

Walkerhill also operates Darakhyu capsule hotels at Incheon Airport’s transport centres. Their booking interface allows stays measured in hours, with a three-hour minimum, as well as overnight reservations. The contrast with a resort stay is useful: the same hospitality organisation can address a brief interval between journeys and a visit in which accommodation is itself the destination. [3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

The historical milestones come from Walkerhill’s own exhibition material. Its claims to national or continental primacy require separate comparison and are not repeated here. The 1978 franchise does not describe today’s branding, and the present collection should not be projected backwards onto the 1963 opening. A name can persist while the guest proposition changes substantially. [1–3]
