Gitano opened in a clearing in the Tulum jungle with a mezcal bar, a disco ball hung in the trees and no sea view at all — and became one of the defining venues of the Riviera Maya boom.
2 · Why it matters
The house demonstrated that the components of the beach club — a long afternoon, a curated sound, a signature drink, a photogenic single object — could be detached from the shoreline entirely. The disco ball in the canopy did the work that a horizon does elsewhere.
It also anchored a hospitality economy that grew explosively around it, which makes it an important record of how a single venue can shape a destination — and of what that growth costs.
3 · Signature & ritual
Mezcal as the house spirit, tacos and Mexican cooking of ambition, candlelight, and the disco ball. The evening arc replaces the afternoon one.
4 · What this house does not solve
A venue that helps create a boom inherits the boom's consequences. Tulum's development has raised documented environmental and infrastructural concerns ⚑, and hospitality that markets jungle cannot be indifferent to what the jungle is becoming.
The formula is thin without the setting: exported to city locations, the house competes as a restaurant with a good bar rather than as an experience.
And the destination itself has proved volatile — a market that changed character within a decade can change again, faster than a venue can reposition.
