Opening

Sandals and Beaches form one of the Caribbean’s most influential all-inclusive hospitality systems. Sandals began in Jamaica in 1981 as Gordon “Butch” Stewart’s attempt to build a better couples resort; Beaches followed in 1997 after Sandals guests asked for a comparable experience they could share with their children. The two brands therefore use much of the same operating infrastructure while solving different travel needs: Sandals is adults-only and romance-led, while Beaches is family- and multigenerational-led. Together they helped move Caribbean all-inclusive from convenience toward a far more ambitious combination of accommodation, food, drink, sport, entertainment, service and destination access.

Gordon “Butch” Stewart and the Jamaican Origin

In April 1981 Gordon “Butch” Stewart bought the run-down Bay Roc hotel beside the airport in Montego Bay despite having no hotel experience. After a major renovation it reopened as Sandals Montego Bay. Stewart’s operating principle was direct: understand what guests want, give it to them and exceed expectations.

The resort became the foundation of a Caribbean family-owned hospitality company rather than a foreign chain operating in the region. That distinction remains central to Made of Caribbean: the islands are presented as home and as the source of the people, rhythm, food, landscape and service culture behind the brand.

Sandals — Couples-Only All-Inclusive

Sandals is the adult side of the platform. The current official site lists 17 all-inclusive resorts for adults across Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia, The Bahamas, Grenada, Barbados, Curaçao and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Romance remains the organizing idea: couples, honeymoons, anniversaries, weddings and adults seeking a Caribbean beach holiday without a family-resort environment.

The brand expanded the all-inclusive bundle to include specialty restaurants, premium spirits and wines, PADI-certified scuba diving, snorkeling, land and water sports, transfers, Wi-Fi, taxes and gratuities. The objective is inclusion that feels abundant rather than economical.

Beaches — The Family Counterpart

Beaches was created in 1997 after couples who loved Sandals asked for a similar experience for their families. In 2026 the official corporate page identifies two operating Beaches resorts: Beaches Negril in Jamaica and Beaches Turks & Caicos.

Beaches is not simply Sandals with children admitted. Kids’ and teen programming, family entertainment, multibedroom accommodation, childcare and family dining must coexist with adult restaurants, spa, beach and villa experiences. The result is one of the Caribbean’s most developed family all-inclusive systems.

One Platform, Two Guest Missions

The strategic strength is segmentation without abandoning shared operating DNA. Sandals can optimize for romance and adults-only social life; Beaches can optimize for families. Both retain Caribbean immersion, high inclusion, extensive dining, water sports, service and repeat-guest recognition.

This protects both propositions: Sandals does not dilute its couples identity with family infrastructure, while Beaches does not disguise the realities of multigenerational travel.

From All-Inclusive to Luxury Included

Sandals spent decades advancing the idea of Luxury Included, separating its proposition from conventional mass-market all-inclusive through the quality and range of inclusions: multiple à la carte restaurants, premium alcohol, scuba diving, selected golf, sophisticated accommodation and higher service tiers.

The contemporary Made of Caribbean chapter adds cultural legitimacy. The proposition is increasingly not only “more included” but “closer to the Caribbean”: local people, food, music, nature and destination experiences become central parts of value.

Accommodation Innovation

Sandals repeatedly used accommodation as a competitive weapon. Rondoval suites and villas created a circular private-honeymoon language; swim-up suites brought the pool to the room; overwater bungalows and villas imported a South-Pacific visual idea into the Caribbean; private-island components add another layer of seclusion.

At the top end, Butler suites and villas sit materially above standard rooms in space and service. A single resort can therefore span conventional premium all-inclusive and highly private villa hospitality.

Butler Elite and Service Segmentation

Butler Elite is a key mechanism for moving beyond standardized all-inclusive. Butler-category guests receive more personalized planning, dining coordination, beach and pool arrangements, in-room service and special-occasion support. Sandals Royal Plantation is especially notable as a smaller all-butler resort.

This segmentation creates a personal hospitality world inside a larger resort and is particularly relevant to honeymoons, milestone trips and top accommodation categories.

Dining as an Operating System

Food is structurally central. Luxury all-inclusive only works if guests can dine repeatedly over long stays without feeling trapped by one buffet or repetitive menus. Sandals and Beaches therefore operate numerous restaurant concepts and integrate premium beverages into the proposition.

Restaurant variety, reservation management, kitchen consistency and opening schedules are as important as guestrooms. Beaches adds the complexity of serving children, teenagers, parents and multigenerational groups simultaneously.

Water, Diving and the Caribbean as Product

Sandals treats the Caribbean Sea as part of the resort product rather than merely the view. PADI-certified scuba diving for certified divers, snorkeling and water sports are signature inclusions, distinguishing the system from resorts where marine activity is largely extra-cost.

Made of Caribbean deepens this idea: reefs, island culture, local guides and the surrounding sea become reasons to travel. The strongest experience extends from room to beach to water to island.

Island Routes — Beyond the Resort

Island Routes Caribbean Adventures supplies the off-resort exploration layer, connecting guests with waterfalls, reefs, sailing, food, communities, culture and adventure. Selected promotions have even included Island Routes excursions within qualifying stays.

This addresses a classic criticism of all-inclusive resorts — isolation from destination — while allowing Sandals and Beaches to maintain commercial and service control over the wider guest journey.

Red Lane Spa

Red Lane Spa provides the restorative counterweight to pools, watersports, entertainment and family activity. Treatments, massage and spa environments allow couples or families to move between active Caribbean days and private recovery without leaving the resort ecosystem.

It is not a medical or transformational wellness model; its role is integrated resort recovery.

Weddings, Honeymoons and Romance

Sandals’ couples-only model created deep institutional competence in weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries and vow renewals. Planning, ceremony locations, photography, private dining and honeymoon accommodation are integrated into resort operations.

Romance is therefore not only advertising language but a recurring demand system influencing room design, service and guest occasions.

Beaches and Family Luxury

At Beaches, luxury often means removing family logistics. Children’s entertainment, pools, beach activities, teen spaces, dining choice and multibedroom accommodation let age groups function independently while parents remain within one managed environment. Beaches Turks & Caicos is the fullest expression, operating as a large multi-village family resort world.

The competitive advantage is not simply more children’s activities; it is the absorption of coordination complexity by the resort.

Made of Caribbean

Made of Caribbean reframes Sandals from a company that operates in the Caribbean into a company made by the Caribbean. Official brand films emphasize people, rhythm, food, creativity, nature and connection. Adam Stewart’s leadership creates continuity with the Jamaican founder story while presenting a more contemporary regional identity.

Sandals once differentiated primarily through inclusions. The next chapter increasingly differentiates through cultural legitimacy: a Caribbean-born company offering access to its own region.

Sandals Foundation

The Sandals Foundation formalizes a long history of community involvement across education, community programmes and environmental initiatives. Corporate material connects this work to the belief that tourism should create opportunity for Caribbean people and preserve the region’s environment.

Because Sandals presents itself as Caribbean-rooted, social impact is strategically connected to brand credibility rather than functioning only as a separate CSR layer.

Island Insiders Club

On July 1, 2026 Sandals Select Rewards became Island Insiders Club, the shared official loyalty programme of Sandals and Beaches Resorts. Existing points, historical nights, tier status and redemption value continued. Current tiers are Shell, Coral, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl and Ambassador.

Members earn reward points on resort stays with higher multipliers at upper tiers and can receive on-resort discounts, spa or reward choices, recognition gifts, events and other privileges. LHL Loyalty should therefore read: Brand — Island Insiders Club; formerly Sandals Select Rewards.

Current Portfolio and Jamaica Reimagination

As of August 2026 Sandals lists 17 adults-only resorts across eight Caribbean island destinations. Jamaica remains the deepest cluster and historical center. A major late-2026 reimagination affects Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals South Coast and Sandals Caribbean Cay, the new name for the former Sandals Royal Caribbean.

Reinvestment in mature Jamaican properties is as strategically important as expansion into newer islands such as Curaçao and Saint Vincent.

Landmark Sandals Resorts

Sandals Montego Bay · Jamaica — The 1981 origin and flagship.

Sandals Caribbean Cay · Jamaica — Formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean; distinguished by a private-island dimension and entering a new chapter under the Caribbean Cay name.

Sandals Royal Plantation · Jamaica — Smaller all-butler resort demonstrating the intimate upper end of Sandals.

Sandals South Coast · Jamaica — Known for overwater accommodation and a more secluded setting.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian · Saint Lucia — Strong romance and overwater-bungalow expression.

Sandals Royal Barbados · Barbados — Contemporary, amenity-rich interpretation.

Sandals Royal Curaçao · Curaçao — Major Dutch-Caribbean expansion and a more design-conscious recent-generation resort.

Sandals Saint Vincent · Saint Vincent and the Grenadines — Important expression of the Made of Caribbean era.

Landmark Beaches Resorts

Beaches Turks & Caicos · Providenciales — The most expansive Beaches expression, a multi-village family resort world with extensive dining, pools, water activities and entertainment.

Beaches Negril · Jamaica — Family-focused resort on Seven Mile Beach and a long-standing reference for the Beaches model.

The two-resort portfolio is strikingly compact relative to Beaches’ brand recognition, making each property strategically important.

What Distinguishes Sandals & Beaches

CARIBBEAN-BORN SCALE. A major regional hospitality company with Jamaica still central to its origin story.

TWO CLEAR MISSIONS. Sandals owns adults-only romance; Beaches owns family all-inclusive.

ALL-INCLUSIVE AS AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Dining, drinks, diving, sports, transfers, gratuities and entertainment are integrated.

ACCOMMODATION INNOVATION. Rondovals, swim-up suites, overwater villas and private-island products refresh the category.

BUTLER ELITE. Personalized service creates a luxury layer inside large resorts.

MADE OF CARIBBEAN. Regional people and culture are increasingly positioned as the source of the brand.

ISLAND INSIDERS CLUB. A mature shared loyalty ecosystem links repeat guests.

SANDALS FOUNDATION. Community and environmental programmes reinforce Caribbean rootedness.

Who It Is Not For

Sandals is not for travellers seeking children-friendly hospitality, independent boutique hotels or a pay-as-you-go luxury model; adults-only couples and all-inclusive are fundamental. Beaches is not for travellers seeking an adults-only atmosphere or very small-scale seclusion. Both operate substantial resort systems with programmed dining, activities and entertainment. Guests who fundamentally dislike all-inclusive environments or prefer formal grand-hotel ritual may prefer other brands.

Booking with LVXVRY

Sandals and Beaches require category-level rather than brand-level booking analysis. Standard accommodation, Club categories, Butler Elite suites, Rondovals, swim-up rooms, overwater products and large family suites can materially change service, privacy and value. Island Insiders Club should be handled separately from advisor benefits. For Sandals, wedding/honeymoon needs and resort personality are important; for Beaches, family ages, bedroom configuration, childcare and resort layout should drive selection.

Editorial Note

This entry reflects the official portfolio and brand structure reviewed in August 2026. Sandals currently presents 17 adults-only resorts across eight Caribbean island destinations. The corporate page identifies two operating Beaches resorts — Negril and Turks & Caicos — and dates the first Beaches opening to 1997. The shared loyalty programme was renamed Island Insiders Club on July 1, 2026, replacing Sandals Select Rewards while preserving existing points, status and history. Current Jamaica materials also confirm the late-2026 reimagination and renaming of Sandals Royal Caribbean as Sandals Caribbean Cay. Resort counts and names should be checked periodically as the portfolio evolves.
