Opening
Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences is one of Central Europe’s most substantial family-rooted resort hospitality platforms. Its history begins not with a grand hotel but with a small South Tyrolean guesthouse opened in 1957 by Maria and Josef Falkensteiner. Over nearly seven decades, the business evolved through a second generation, partnership with Otmar Michaeler, international expansion and the creation of FMTG into a vertically integrated tourism group spanning hotels, residences, premium camping, development, consulting and investment.
1957 — The South Tyrolean Origin
Maria and Josef Falkensteiner opened a guesthouse in Ehrenburg, South Tyrol, in 1957. This modest beginning remains central to the family narrative: hospitality came before corporate structure, real-estate development or international expansion.
The South Tyrolean origin explains recurring strengths — mountain leisure, family travel, wellness, food and a practical understanding of seasonal resort operations. The brand later moved far beyond South Tyrol, but its operating DNA remains closer to European holiday hospitality than to metropolitan business hotels.
The Second Generation
In 1978 brothers Andreas and Erich Falkensteiner took over the company. They transformed the family business from a local hospitality operation into an expanding tourism enterprise. Falk Tours, founded in 1982, added incoming-tourism competence and signalled an early willingness to integrate more of the travel value chain.
The brothers remain central to the ownership story. Falkensteiner therefore combines family continuity with a far more institutional corporate structure than a conventional owner-operated hotel collection.
Otmar Michaeler and FMTG
Otmar Michaeler joined in 1995, when Falkensteiner Hotel Management and Michaeler & Partner were established. The partnership eventually led to the creation of Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group in 2006/07 and relocation of headquarters to Vienna.
This was the decisive structural step. FMTG became more than a hotel company: it could develop, advise, operate, finance and invest in tourism projects. Vertical integration is one of Falkensteiner’s clearest differences from a conventional hotel brand.
European Expansion
The first Austrian hotel was acquired in 1998, followed by Croatia in 2000, the Czech Republic in 2003, Slovakia in 2008 and Serbia in 2012. Italy remained strategically important because of the South Tyrolean origin and later expanded through major resort openings.
The resulting geography is distinctly European: Alps, lakes, Adriatic coast and Mediterranean leisure destinations. Falkensteiner’s expertise is concentrated in places where guests travel specifically for holiday.
From Hotels to a Tourism Ecosystem
FMTG extends beyond hotel operations into development, consulting, premium camping and investment structures. This gives the organization multiple roles in the same project lifecycle.
For LHL, Falkensteiner should be read at two levels: the guest-facing Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences brand and the wider FMTG platform that creates, finances and manages tourism assets.
A Broad Premium Portfolio
Falkensteiner is not a uniformly luxury collection. Its portfolio covers family resorts, wellness hotels, ski and mountain properties, Adriatic beach resorts, city hotels, apartments and residences. The contemporary upper end increasingly emphasizes sophisticated design, cuisine, spa and premium leisure.
A Falkensteiner family hotel and Schlosshotel Velden do not deliver the same luxury intensity, even though they share the same group. Precise tiering is therefore essential.
The Premium Collection
The Premium Collection is the clearest upper layer. Official material frames it around cherished time together, custom-tailored experiences, sophisticated design, outstanding cuisine and exclusive spa moments.
Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz and Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon are all members of The Leading Hotels of the World. This upper tier allows Falkensteiner to compete credibly in luxury without claiming that every property belongs to the same segment.
Schlosshotel Velden
Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden on Lake Wörthersee is the clearest landmark luxury property. The historic lakeside castle combines resort leisure, spa, gastronomy, events and a highly recognizable architectural identity. It belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World and has received two Michelin Keys.
Velden anchors Falkensteiner above conventional premium family or wellness hospitality and gives the group a genuine European grand-resort landmark.
Hotel Kronplatz
Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz represents a contemporary design-led interpretation of Alpine hospitality. Opened in 2020, it places architecture, mountain sport, wellness and South Tyrolean food culture inside a five-star resort proposition.
Its Leading Hotels affiliation demonstrates how Falkensteiner can translate regional knowledge into internationally legible luxury.
Hotel Montafon
Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon, opened in 2022, combines premium Alpine design with a strong family focus. It demonstrates that Falkensteiner does not treat family hospitality as incompatible with luxury.
The hotel’s Leading Hotels membership reinforces a distinctive proposition: children’s infrastructure, sport, nature and spa can coexist with high-quality architecture and service.
Family Hospitality
Family travel is one of Falkensteiner’s deepest operating competencies. The group has decades of experience with children’s programmes, family room configurations, water worlds, sports, seasonal activities and multigenerational resort logistics.
Properties such as Family Resort Lido and future family projects show continued investment. Falkensteiner can design the entire hotel around parents and children rather than merely adding a kids’ club.
Wellness and Spa
Wellness is another structural pillar. Alpine and lake destinations naturally support spa-led leisure, while coastal properties combine beach activity with substantial wellness infrastructure. The portfolio includes adults-only wellness propositions as well as family spa resorts.
The advantage is breadth: wellness can be adapted by segment rather than imposed as one standardized spa concept.
Adriatic and Mediterranean Resorts
Croatia became one of Falkensteiner’s most important markets after the first acquisition in 2000. Punta Skala near Zadar is especially significant, combining hotels, residences, sport, wellness and further residential development.
Italy adds Adriatic, Alpine and Mediterranean leisure, including Jesolo, South Tyrol, Sardinia and future projects. The combination of Alps and sea is central to the brand’s European holiday identity.
Residences
Falkensteiner Residences combine the freedom and privacy of a second home with resort services and amenities. The model is available through ownership and rental. Current examples include Residences Jesolo, Edel:weiss and Senia, while Aurora in Punta Skala and Lake Garda represent the next development wave.
Residences extend the guest relationship into ownership and investment and fit naturally with FMTG’s development competence.
Premium Camping
FMTG launched Premium Camping as a product line in 2018/19, beginning in Zadar. The concept expands the group beyond conventional hotel architecture into high-quality nature-based accommodation and resort infrastructure.
Strategically it reveals the breadth of FMTG’s leisure thesis: premium holidays can be delivered through different accommodation formats rather than a hotel-only identity.
Design and Architecture
Falkensteiner increasingly uses prominent architects and designers to differentiate new projects. Contemporary hotels and residences respond to mountain, lake or beach settings rather than reproduce one corporate façade.
Future projects reinforce this direction: the planned Cesenatico hotel lists Richard Meier, while the Sicily family resort names Vudafieri Saverino Partners. Design is becoming a stronger upper-tier brand signal.
Falkensteiner Members Club
In 2026 Falkensteiner introduced the Falkensteiner Members Club as its new loyalty programme, succeeding the Spirit Club and Direct Booking Club for members who transition into the new system. It is free and applies across Falkensteiner hotels, residences and campsites, with selected white-label exclusions.
Members collect points from qualifying direct stays and redeem them for experiences. The four tiers are Member, Repeater, Traveller and Insider, with benefits including Welcome Back discounts, extended wellness access, selectable experiences and higher-tier recognition.
Loyalty as Experience
Points are calculated according to stay, accommodation category and duration rather than simply money spent. Redemption focuses on experiences such as wine tastings, e-bike days or couples’ massages.
This fits the leisure orientation: loyalty becomes another layer of the holiday rather than only a transactional currency. For LHL the correct classification is Brand — Falkensteiner Members Club.
Investment and Crowdinvesting
FMTG’s development model includes investment structures, including FMTG Invest and crowd-investing activity. This is unusual compared with traditional hotel brands and reflects the group’s vertically integrated approach to tourism real estate.
The benefit is access to additional capital and investor engagement; the challenge is maintaining clear separation between guest hospitality, property investment and corporate finance narratives.
Pipeline
The development pipeline continues to emphasize family, residences and leisure destinations. Falkensteiner Family Resort Sicily is scheduled for spring 2027 with 125 rooms and suites. Residences Aurora expands Punta Skala. Camping Pila on Krk is planned for 2027. A family hotel in Grömitz is planned for 2028, and a five-star Cesenatico project is also in development.
The pipeline suggests disciplined European expansion rather than indiscriminate global growth.
What Distinguishes Falkensteiner
FAMILY BUSINESS + INSTITUTIONAL SCALE. A 1957 guesthouse evolved into a sophisticated tourism group without losing family leadership.
VERTICAL INTEGRATION. FMTG combines hospitality, development, consulting, investment and additional leisure formats.
FAMILY HOSPITALITY DEPTH. Family travel is a genuine operating competence.
ALPS + ADRIATIC. The portfolio is built around European holiday geography.
PREMIUM COLLECTION. The upper tier creates credible luxury flagships inside a broader premium system.
RESIDENCES. Ownership and rental extend hospitality into long-term lifestyle.
MEMBERS CLUB. A proprietary 2026 loyalty system links hotels, residences and campsites.
What the Model Does Not Solve
Breadth creates brand tension. Guests can encounter Falkensteiner as a five-star Leading Hotel, a family resort, an adults-only wellness hotel, a residence or a campsite. Without clear segmentation, the umbrella can mean too many things.
The strongest luxury properties therefore need their own reputational power. Velden, Kronplatz and Montafon must independently justify premium positioning through architecture, service and destination identity.

Booking with LVXVRY
Falkensteiner must be booked at property level because the umbrella covers materially different luxury tiers and holiday concepts. At Schlosshotel Velden, room category and lake orientation may be central; at Kronplatz or Montafon, season, activity access, family composition and spa use matter more. The Falkensteiner Members Club rewards qualifying direct bookings, so its benefits should be evaluated separately from advisor or third-party preferred benefits.
Editorial Note
This entry reflects Falkensteiner’s official corporate history and product structure reviewed in August 2026. The company traces its origin to Maria and Josef Falkensteiner’s 1957 guesthouse in Ehrenburg; Andreas and Erich Falkensteiner took over in 1978; Otmar Michaeler joined in 1995; FMTG was formed in 2006/07. The Falkensteiner Members Club is the current proprietary loyalty programme from 2026, with Member, Repeater, Traveller and Insider tiers. The portfolio is broad and should not be classified uniformly as luxury: LHL focuses particularly on the Premium Collection, residences and landmark resort assets.
