Jean-Prosper Gay-Para built the Byblos as a homage to Bardot, muse of Saint-Tropez, and the club beneath it opened in July 1967 after three days of inaugural festivities organised by Jacqueline Veyssière. Juliette Gréco, Françoise Sagan and Jacques Chazot were there. The Six-Day War broke out in June; on 19 September Gay-Para sold the hotel to Sylvain Floirat and returned to Beirut to manage his own. He had owned the most famous nightclub on the Riviera for roughly ten weeks.
2 · Why it is in the Library
It is the register's clearest case of a satellite outgrowing its house. Byblos is LHL-H-538 Byblos Saint-Tropez and celebrated; Les Caves du Roy is named in the same breath as Studio 54, Pacha and Le Palace, and for fifty years people have booked the hotel to get into the club. Under the Library's own test — the restaurant through the bed — this is the room the bed exists to reach.
3 · The line it sits in
Sylvain Floirat is LHL-P-368 Sylvain Floirat; his great-grandson Antoine Chevanne, LHL-P-369 Antoine Chevanne, took the group in 2006 and turned it toward luxury hospitality, boutique hotels and society nightclubs, opening Black Legend in Monaco in October 2009. The club Gay-Para lost in ten weeks became the model the family built a business on.
4 · Candour
⚑ One source dates the club's star clientele from 1979 rather than 1967; the Library follows the hotel's own timeline and the Wikipedia record, both of which give July 1967, and notes the discrepancy. The club was remodelled for the fiftieth anniversary in 2017 alongside a series of brand partnerships, which is worth stating plainly: what a guest enters today is a 2017 room carrying a 1967 name.
