Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad presents the equipment of exploration as part of the guest’s day rather than as ship’s gear. Its published list of tools covers Zodiacs for landing on remote shores, single and tandem kayaks, remotely operated vehicles that dive to depths of up to 1,000 feet, hydrophones for hearing whales beneath the bow, bow cams and video microscopes, a camera at the masthead, and a bridge guests may enter at any time of day. What is offered is access rather than seclusion. [1]

1 · POSITION

Lindblad presents the equipment of exploration as part of the guest’s day rather than as ship’s gear. Its published list of tools covers Zodiacs for landing on remote shores, single and tandem kayaks, remotely operated vehicles that dive to depths of up to 1,000 feet, hydrophones for hearing whales beneath the bow, bow cams and video microscopes, a camera at the masthead, and a bridge guests may enter at any time of day. 2 · A CABIN WITH A COMMAND CENTRE

The line’s Antarctica brochure gives National Geographic Endurance a capacity of 126 guests in 69 outside cabins, of which 53 have balconies. Cabins are equipped with what Lindblad calls expedition command centres, with tablets and USB and mobile device docking. The interiors were conceived by Partnership Design in Hamburg, and the thirteen extra-large balcony suites are each named for a polar explorer. The line’s current ships page lists the same vessel at 138 guests in 76 cabins. [2, 3, 4]

3 · TWO RESTAURANTS AND A GLASS ROOM

The ship has two restaurants with unassigned seating, the main room built around 270-degree views and the second serving lighter fare on the observation deck. Wellness is gathered in The Sanctuary: treatment rooms, a relax area, high- and low-heat saunas, a glass-enclosed yoga studio and infinity-style outdoor hot tubs. Trade reporting at the ship’s announcement named the main restaurant Two Seven Zeroº and a second venue C. Green’s, with barbecues in a heated winter garden. [3, 4]

4 · THE STAFF ARE PART OF THE ACCOMMODATION

Lindblad says its expedition teams are hand-picked for their knowledge of polar natural history and their ice skills, and chosen for knowledge of natural history, life and climate sciences, and the history of polar exploration. The company states that only on its expeditions is an undersea specialist an integral part of the team. That specialist deploys the remotely operated vehicle, and the footage is shown at the nightly recap. Certified photo instructors sail as well. [1, 3]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ The line’s own pages disagree about one ship: a brochure gives National Geographic Endurance 126 guests in 69 cabins, while the current ships page gives 138 guests in 76. That same page states that capacities never exceed 148 guests and then lists a vessel at 154. The remotely operated vehicles are described as deployed from select ships and must not be assumed fleet-wide. No founding year, and no date for the National Geographic alliance, could be established from the pages fetched. [1–4]
