Hyatt launched The Unbound Collection by Hyatt on 2 March 2016 as a global collection of independent upper-upscale and luxury hotels that could retain their own names and character while gaining Hyatt distribution, operational resources and loyalty. The launch portfolio included The Driskill in Austin, Hôtel du Louvre in Paris and Carmelo Resort & Spa in Uruguay, with Coco Palms Kauai announced for future revitalisation. Ten years later, Hyatt's live Explore directory shows 56 operating properties across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia.
The Brand
The Unbound Collection is Hyatt's luxury soft-brand architecture for hotels whose individual story is more important than a repeated physical template. Hyatt currently places it in the Luxury Portfolio alongside Park Hyatt, Alila, Miraval and Impression by Secrets. This is a meaningful repositioning from the original 2016 launch language, which explicitly allowed both upper-upscale and luxury properties. The hotel name remains the protagonist. Hôtel du Palais Biarritz, The Driskill, Great Scotland Yard Hotel, Hotel Martinez, Párisi Udvar, Fuji Speedway Hotel and newer members are not expected to look alike. Hyatt provides World of Hyatt, distribution, technology and brand assurance behind houses that retain distinct histories, architecture and local identities.
Philosophy
The founding promise was freedom without isolation: owners could preserve the character of an independent hotel while gaining the commercial infrastructure and loyalty reach of Hyatt. Hyatt described the concept as giving properties freedom from constraint or convention while giving guests reassurance through the Hyatt system. The current expression is 'Stories Worth Collecting'. Hyatt groups the portfolio conceptually into iconic havens, modern marvels and revitalizing retreats. A hotel qualifies through a story worth travelling for — history, architecture, design, personality, location, wellness or another form of distinctiveness — rather than through one prescribed aesthetic.
What Distinguishes it
Story before flag The collection is designed so that the guest remembers The Driskill, Hôtel du Palais or Great Scotland Yard rather than a standard Unbound room. The master brand works as an endorsement. Luxury soft brand Unlike JdV by Hyatt or Destination by Hyatt, Unbound now sits in Hyatt's Luxury Portfolio. The portfolio can still vary in intensity, but the current strategic position is clearly higher. Historic and new The collection is not restricted to heritage hotels. A living landmark, contemporary architectural statement or wellness retreat can qualify if its individual narrative is strong enough. Hyatt without Hyatt sameness World of Hyatt and corporate systems sit behind hotels that are intentionally free to retain individual names, design languages and local service expression. A collection that can absorb conversions Unbound is particularly useful for owners of established independent hotels that want global distribution without surrendering accumulated brand equity.
Who it is Not For
The Unbound Collection is not for travellers who want one predictable physical product or one recurring service ritual from city to city. The experience can vary substantially because individuality is the point. Guests who prefer the tightly codified service culture of Park Hyatt or a hard luxury flag should evaluate the individual Unbound property rather than assume uniformity.
Signature Houses
1886 / 2016 · The Driskill · Austin One of the founding operating hotels and the clearest American expression of the collection's historic-landmark thesis. 1855 / Unbound era · Hôtel du Louvre · Paris A Paris grand hotel facing the Louvre whose own identity and location remain stronger than the collection name. 1854 / 2019 · Hôtel du Palais Biarritz · Biarritz Originally built as the imperial residence of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie; a direct example of an individual house whose history supplies the brand story. 1929 / Unbound era · Hotel Martinez · Cannes A Croisette palace whose Art Deco identity and Cannes social history make it one of the collection's most visible European houses.
Great Scotland Yard Hotel · London
A conversion of a historically charged Westminster site into a contemporary luxury hotel, showing how Unbound can build a new hotel story from inherited urban history.
Fuji Speedway Hotel · Shizuoka
A modern property built around motorsport culture, Mount Fuji and a museum connection, demonstrating that Unbound is not simply a heritage-palace collection.
Ten Years of Growth
In April 2026 Hyatt marked the collection's tenth anniversary by announcing The Georgian, Hotel 1000, Cayo Levantado Resort and The Clayfield as 2026 additions in the Americas, with The Digby and Casa Duhau planned for 2027. The announcement demonstrates the collection's continued use as a conversion and development vehicle in both urban and resort markets.
2026 Asia Expansion
THE BARAI HUA HIN joined in June 2026 as the collection's first hotel in Thailand. The 98-room beachfront wellness resort is a useful example of the 'revitalizing retreat' category and expands Unbound beyond its historically stronger North American and European footprint.
Current Geography
The live Hyatt Explore directory reviewed in August 2026 returns 56 operating results. The directory shows properties across the United States and Canada, Mexico and Panama, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, plus Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Chinese Mainland. LHL uses this live directory count rather than a rounded press-release figure.
Ownership Model
Unbound is a corporate Hyatt brand, but individual hotels are commonly owned by third parties and can enter through management or franchise / affiliation structures. The brand's value to owners is precisely the ability to preserve asset identity while accessing Hyatt systems.
World of Hyatt
The Unbound Collection participates in World of Hyatt. Eligible stays earn points and qualifying nights, status benefits apply under programme rules and awards can be redeemed according to each property's World of Hyatt category and availability.

Booking With LVXVRY
The Unbound Collection by Hyatt is part of World of Hyatt, but Hyatt Privé participation must be verified at property level and for the requested rate. LVXVRY does not assume that all 56 Unbound hotels participate merely because they carry a Hyatt collection flag. Where Hyatt Privé is confirmed, qualifying LVXVRY reservations may include breakfast for two, a property credit, upgrade priority and arrival / departure consideration, with exact benefits varying by hotel and rate. Eligible preferred bookings can preserve World of Hyatt points, qualifying nights and status recognition under current programme rules.
