Contribution to hospitalityThe anti-club — membership without hierarchy, and the template for the creative members' club

1 · Opening

The Groucho opened in Soho in 1985, founded by people from publishing who wanted a club that would admit women as full members, ignore dress codes and take writers over bankers. The name is the joke: Groucho Marx would not join any club that would have him.

2 · Why it matters

Everything that Soho House later industrialised began here. The creative members' club — no ties, no committee of grandees, a bar rather than a smoking room — was invented on Dean Street and then scaled by others into a global business.

For the Library it is the necessary counterweight to Annabel's. Both are London private clubs of the same era; one organised luxury around exclusion by grandeur, the other around exclusion by profession. Only one of them produced a global industry.

Its later history — ownership changes and financial difficulty ⚑ — is part of the record: the model was more valuable to those who copied it than to the house that invented it.

3 · Signature & ritual

The Dean Street bar; a members' list drawn from writing, media, art and music; a deliberate absence of ceremony.

4 · What this house does not solve

An anti-establishment club becomes an establishment within a generation, and its founding argument stops being available to it.

Media and publishing — the professions it was built for — have lost the expense accounts that made club life normal.

And the house has changed hands under financial pressure ⚑, which for a club whose value is atmosphere is the hardest kind of transition to survive.

7 · LHL story

“The Club That Was Copied Into a Global Industry” — A Soho club invented the members' house for creative professions in 1985. Someone else turned the idea into a company on four continents, and the original changed hands under pressure.
