Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys is what happens when the largest privately owned shipping company in the world decides to build luxury from scratch rather than buy it.

Position

MSC ordered four luxury ships from Fincantieri in October 2018, later six, before the brand had a name; Explora Journeys was launched in June 2021 from Geneva and EXPLORA I sailed on 1 August 2023. Every cabin is an ocean-front suite with a terrace — there are no cabins — and the fare covers drinks, gratuities and most dining. There are no formal nights.

Why it is in the Library

The Aponte story is the entry. Gianluigi Aponte was a Neapolitan ferry captain who met his Swiss wife when she was a passenger on one of his crossings, and built MSC into the world’s largest privately held cruise company. Explora is that family’s luxury statement, built with about €3.5 billion of its own money rather than assembled from acquisitions — the opposite path to Regent, and the Library holds both so the two can be read against each other.

What this model does not solve

Nine hundred guests is small for an ocean ship and large for a luxury yacht, and the brand has to argue against both neighbours at once. The last two hulls are designed for liquid-hydrogen fuel cells at berth, which is a claim about the future of the category made by a company that has ordered six ships and must fill them.
