Azerai is Adrian Zecha's post-Aman attempt to reinterpret the principles of quiet, place-led hospitality at a more accessible level. The brand is lighter in ceremony than ultra-luxury, but retains the conviction that architecture, landscape, privacy and service should make the destination more legible rather than compete with it.
Adrian Zecha
Before Azerai, Adrian Zecha was a founding partner of Regent International, founder of Aman Resorts, a founding shareholder of Rafael Hotels and a central figure at GHM. The official Azerai platform presents this lineage as the intellectual foundation of Azotels.
The Azotels Team
Azerai describes an Azotels core team that has worked together for more than three decades designing, launching and operating hotels and resorts. The brand is therefore backed by long institutional experience.
2017 - The Beginning
Azerai launched in 2017 with Luang Prabang, establishing the original proposition of refined but more attainable destination hospitality.
The Name
The name has historically been explained through Zecha's initials and the idea of the caravanserai - a place of rest on a journey. The concept fits a brand organised around destination rather than spectacle.
Accessible Luxury
The current official homepage calls Azerai Azotels' most accessible luxury collection. The proposition is refined design and attentive service without the cost structure and theatrical excess of the highest ultra-luxury tier.
The Destination Is Just the Beginning
Azerai seeks to blur the boundary between resort and surrounding culture through excursions, food, wellness and local interpretation.
Understatement
Neutral materials, generous space, natural light and limited decorative noise create calm rather than immediate spectacle.
The Zecha School
The underlying principle is recognisable: choose a place with intrinsic character, reduce architectural competition with it, and make privacy and service feel natural rather than ceremonial.
Different from Aman
Azerai is not simply Aman at a lower rate. Aman is built around exceptional scarcity and ultra-luxury pricing; Azerai retains restraint and place sensitivity while accepting broader use and a more accessible operating model.
Portfolio Evolution
The portfolio has changed materially since launch. Luang Prabang left early; Can Tho later became Legacy Mekong. The current official homepage and booking engine now present only Hue and Ke Ga Bay.
Why Portfolio Dating Matters
Legacy Azerai pages for Can Tho remain indexed online, but current navigation does not list it as a destination. LHL therefore separates historical properties from the live portfolio.
Azerai Can Tho
Can Tho was an important chapter: a low-density Mekong Delta retreat on Con Au Islet with 60 rooms and large pool villas in historical Azerai materials.
Can Tho Becomes Legacy Mekong
From 1 November 2024, Azerai Can Tho was renamed Legacy Mekong and moved under Nova Hotel & Resort World. It belongs in Azerai history but not in the current operating portfolio.
Azerai La Residence, Hue
Hue is the heritage expression of Azerai. It occupies 2.5 hectares with 200 metres of frontage on the Perfume River and contains 122 rooms and suites.
The 1930s Mansion
The historic mansion was built in the 1930s as part of the residence of the French Resident Superieure.
Streamline Moderne
Long horizontal lines and nautical flourishes identify the mansion with Streamline Moderne Art Deco, giving Hue a strong architectural identity.
The 2005 Wings
Two complementary wings built in 2005 echo the historic Art Deco language while remaining contemporary and frame gardens and a salt-water pool.
Three Accommodation Worlds
The 122 rooms and suites occupy the West Wing, original Mansion and East Wing, allowing modern rooms and heritage suites to coexist.
The Resident Suite
The 72-square-metre Resident Suite occupies the top floor of the original mansion and opens to a large veranda with 360-degree views.
Hue as Destination
Hue is Vietnam's former imperial capital. The hotel sits within a landscape of Nguyen Dynasty palaces, tombs, pagodas, river culture and twentieth-century history.
Imperial Heritage
Current Azerai tours connect guests with the Imperial Citadel, royal art, Tu Duc's mausoleum and Tu Hieu Pagoda.
The Perfume River
Private cruises turn the river from a view into a route through the destination.
The Traditional Boat
A locally built 55-foot wooden boat carries up to 12 passengers for afternoon tea, sunset cocktails and dinner cruises.
Modern History
The experience programme also addresses the DMZ and wartime history, broadening interpretation beyond imperial nostalgia.
Le Spa
Recent renovation expanded Le Spa and introduced thermotherapy areas while other public spaces and rooms were also refreshed.
Azerai Ke Ga Bay
Ke Ga Bay is the coastal counterpoint: a secluded resort set among 4.5 hectares of gardens on a five-kilometre white-sand beach.
The Coastal Setting
Hon Ba Island and its historic lighthouse frame one side of the resort while dunes define the other. Landscape calm is the central luxury asset.
From Princess d'Annam to Azerai
Ke Ga Bay succeeded Princess d'Annam Resort & Spa after extensive renovation, another example of Azerai transforming an existing asset.
The Room-Count Question
Official Azerai materials from different dates conflict: the launch release described 46 keys, while a later factsheet lists 57 suites and pavilions. LHL therefore avoids treating either undated count as permanently definitive.
Suites and Villas
Current accommodation pages range from 65-square-metre Deluxe Suites to 130- and 145-square-metre pool villas and a 185-square-metre two-bedroom Ke Ga Bay Villa.
Material Language
Whites, granite tones, timber, rattan, seagrass and pebble-washed floors connect the interiors with local sand, stone and craft.
Clean Minimalism
Ke Ga Bay's architecture is described through simplicity, functionality, natural light and open space - the clearest contemporary expression of Azerai's design system.
Beach Without Beach-Club Theatre
Ke Ga Bay is not organised around DJs, fashion retail or social visibility. The product is seclusion, gardens, pools, sea and restorative pace.
Experiences
Across the current brand, the official experience architecture is organised around Adventure, Culture, Dining and Wellness.
Culture
Culture is especially important because Azerai's properties are located in places with strong historical and local identity.
Wellness
Wellness remains restorative and integrated rather than diagnostic; Azerai is not a medical or longevity brand.
Service Philosophy
Service is discreet and attentive rather than theatrical. The desired effect is that needs are anticipated without turning service into performance.
Accessible Does Not Mean Mass Market
Azerai's accessible-luxury proposition still depends on design authorship, meaningful destinations and a high degree of calm.
No Conventional Loyalty Programme
Azerai does not operate a points-led loyalty programme. Repeat behaviour is relationship- and destination-driven.
Travel Trade
The official site maintains dedicated travel-partner resources and GDS codes, reflecting the importance of specialist distribution despite the small portfolio.
The Advantage of a Small Portfolio
Two current hotels allow the brand to remain highly edited and avoid dilution through rapid expansion.
The Disadvantage of a Small Portfolio
A very small portfolio limits network effects, brand awareness and repeat-trip geography. Each property carries disproportionate weight.
The Risk of Portfolio Contraction
Luang Prabang and Can Tho have already left the brand. This raises the strategic question of whether Azerai is a scalable collection or a flexible philosophy applied selectively to assets.
The Risk of Founder Dependence
Azerai's identity is strongly tied to Adrian Zecha. Long-term durability requires the principles to become institutional rather than biographical.
The Risk of Understatement
Quiet design can age gracefully, but it can also be mistaken for insufficient luxury if service, maintenance and material quality are not exceptional.
The Risk of Accessible Luxury
The middle ground between ultra-luxury and conventional upscale is commercially difficult: guests expect meaningful savings without accepting obvious compromise.
Comparison with Aman
Aman is more private, scarce, architecturally controlled and expensive. Azerai is the more accessible descendant of the same belief in place, restraint and unobtrusive service.
Comparison with Alila
Alila is larger and benefits from Hyatt distribution and loyalty. Azerai is far smaller, more founder-authored and less systematised.
Comparison with GHM / The Chedi
The Chedi often operates at a higher luxury tier with more overt resort architecture. Azerai is quieter and deliberately positioned around attainable refinement.
Comparison with COMO
COMO combines restrained design with a much deeper global wellness and resort platform. Azerai is smaller, more destination-specific and less programme-heavy.
Comparison with Capella
Capella operates at a more personalised ultra-luxury level and has expanded globally. Azerai offers a more accessible interpretation of destination immersion and architectural calm.
The Adrian Zecha Continuum
Regent, Aman, GHM and Azerai can be read as different answers to the same question: how should a hotel relate to place, privacy, architecture and service? Azerai is the answer with the lowest barrier to entry.
What the Model Does Not Solve
Understatement does not automatically create authenticity, and accessible luxury does not automatically create value. A small portfolio remains vulnerable to asset exits and weak network recognition; heritage properties require constant investment; beach resorts consume land, water and energy; and destination immersion can become superficial if reduced to excursions.
What Distinguishes Azerai
FOUNDED IN 2017 BY ADRIAN ZECHA. AZOTELS' MOST ACCESSIBLE LUXURY COLLECTION. CURRENT OFFICIAL PORTFOLIO: AZERAI LA RESIDENCE, HUE AND AZERAI KE GA BAY. HUE AS A 122-ROOM ART DECO HERITAGE HOTEL ON THE PERFUME RIVER; KE GA BAY AS A QUIET CONTEMPORARY COASTAL RETREAT. LUANG PRABANG AND CAN THO AS IMPORTANT FORMER CHAPTERS. UNDERSTATEMENT, PLACE, PRIVACY, CULTURE AND DISCREET SERVICE AS THE CORE CODES.
The Strategic Achievement
Azerai's achievement is conceptual rather than numerical. Adrian Zecha attempted to preserve the intelligence of high luxury - restraint, architecture, destination sensitivity and unobtrusive service - while removing some of the scarcity and cost structure that make ultra-luxury inaccessible to most travellers.
The Hospitality Lesson
The Azerai lesson is that accessibility can itself be a design discipline. The operator must decide which elements of luxury are essential and which are expensive theatre. Azerai's answer is that place, calm, good architecture and attentive service matter more than abundance.
Editorial Note
LHL treats Azerai as a living but contracted brand. As of August 2026, the current official homepage and booking engine present Hue and Ke Ga Bay as the active destinations. Azerai Can Tho is retained historically because it was rebranded Legacy Mekong from 1 November 2024.
