1 · Opening
Cova opened near La Scala in 1817, founded by a soldier of Napoleon's armies, and moved to via Montenapoleone when that street became the centre of Italian fashion.
2 · Why it matters
Two histories meet in this house. The first is Milanese: two centuries of the city's commercial and operatic life conducted over coffee and panettone, in a room that functioned as an exchange.
The second is contemporary and important for this Part: in 2013 LVMH acquired the majority ⚑, and Cova became the first historic café absorbed into a luxury conglomerate and expanded through Asia. Where Ladurée grew as a pastry brand and Fauchon built a hotel, Cova was bought as an asset in a fashion portfolio — hospitality as an extension of the maison economy.
Whether that is preservation or absorption is the question the entry has to leave open.
3 · Signature & ritual
Panettone at Christmas, the pasticceria counter, the Montenapoleone terrace, and a Milanese service pace that assumes you are between appointments.
4 · What this house does not solve
A café owned by a fashion group has two masters: the Milanese who made it and the retail strategy that now funds it. When those diverge, the street loses.
Its Asian expansion sells Milan to markets that have never been there, which works commercially and slowly detaches the name from the city it belongs to.
And two centuries of continuity are now a marketing asset rather than a business model — the paradox that Part X keeps recording.
