Fosun Tourism Group

Fosun’s tourism story combines acquiring established travel businesses with developing destinations. The completion of its Club Med transaction in March 2015 and the opening of Atlantis Sanya in April 2018 provide two distinct examples. One brought an existing international resort business into the group; the other created a large resort attraction in China. [1, 2]

1 · POSITION

Fosun’s tourism story combines acquiring established travel businesses with developing destinations. The completion of its Club Med transaction in March 2015 and the opening of Atlantis Sanya in April 2018 provide two distinct examples. One brought an existing international resort business into the group; the other created a large resort attraction in China. [1, 2]

2 · BUYING AN OPERATING TRADITION

Club Med mattered as an organisation already built around resort holidays. Acquiring such a business means acquiring a brand, operating knowledge and customer relationships as well as access to properties. Fosun’s 2015 announcement establishes the transaction’s completion. It should not be confused with the founding date of Club Med or of every later company through which the tourism assets were held. [1]

3 · BUILDING A DESTINATION

Atlantis Sanya supplied a different route into tourism. Fosun Tourism Group’s reporting dates its official opening to April 2018. Here the hospitality proposition depended on creating a destination under an established resort name. Read together, Club Med and Atlantis show why the group cannot be described solely as a purchaser of European travel brands. [2]

4 · A CHANGING PERIMETER

The portfolio has not remained fixed. In October 2024, eSky confirmed completion of its acquisition of the Thomas Cook online travel business from Fosun Tourism Group. Fosun subsequently reported completing the tourism group’s privatisation in March 2025. These are separate changes: one concerns a business leaving the portfolio; the other concerns the ownership structure of the group itself. [3, 4]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

Historical acquisitions are not reliable substitutes for a current holdings list. In particular, the later Thomas Cook online business should not be equated with the entire travel group that collapsed in 2019. Fosun Tourism Group is best understood through dated transactions and operating assets, with each claim tied to the period it actually describes. [3, 4]
