Seabourn built the first ship designed to feel like a private club rather than a liner, and most of what the hotel brands are now doing at sea was on Seabourn Pride in 1988.
Position
Founded in 1987 by the Norwegian industrialist Atle Brynestad with the cruise executive Warren S. Titus and others, to compete at the top of the market. Seabourn Pride launched in 1988 for 208 passengers: all-suite accommodation, a water sports marina opening at the stern, inclusive fares, no tipping and a high crew ratio. Seabourn Spirit followed in 1989. Carnival Corporation bought the line in 1991.
Why it is in the Library
Read that list again and then read the specification of any hotel-brand yacht of the 2020s. All-suite, a marina platform, fares inclusive of drink and gratuity, near one-to-one crew: Seabourn Pride had all of it in 1988. The Library records the invention where it happened rather than where it was rediscovered.
What this model does not solve
The third ship was cancelled for want of money and the company sold within four years of its first sailing. A model can be right and still not survive on its own, which is the recurring lesson of this Part: the ideas outlast the independent companies that have them.
