1 · Position

Jules Jaluzot, a former Bon Marché employee, opened Printemps in 1865, thirteen years after Boucicaut began his transformation. It succeeded immediately, and by 1872 was running mail order from seven catalogues — a general one and six specialised.

2 · Why it is in the Library

The seven catalogues are the entry. Boucicaut posted a single catalogue to millions; Jaluzot segmented the audience and sent each part of it a different book. That is the beginning of the practice every hotel group now runs under another name, and it was in place by 1872.

3 · Candour

⚑ This entry is thinner than Le Bon Marché’s. The building history, the later ownership and the current position were not established here.
