Sexy Fish opened on Berkeley Square in 2015 with a Damien Hirst commission, bronze mermaids by Frank Gehry ⚑ and one of the largest Japanese whisky collections in Europe. The name was the least surprising thing about it.
2 · Why it matters
The house is the maximal expression of a strategy this section has seen developing since Mr Chow: buy the art, and the room becomes unrepeatable.
Where Mr Chow accumulated portraits over decades through friendship, Sexy Fish commissioned an interior at once, at a reported cost that made it one of the most expensive restaurant fit-outs in London ⚑. Both approaches produce a room competitors cannot copy; only one of them can be done with money alone.
It sits on the same square as Annabel's, under related ownership until 2026 ⚑, which makes Berkeley Square the most concentrated hospitality address in this Part.
3 · Signature & ritual
The Hirst works and the Gehry lamps; Japanese whisky; a room that is deliberately louder and more theatrical than its Mayfair neighbours.
4 · What this house does not solve
Art bought at once dates at once: a commissioned interior belongs to the taste of its year in a way an accumulated one does not.
The cooking must survive comparison with the fit-out, and in a room this loud most guests are not listening to the kitchen.
And ownership has now moved ⚑, which for a house defined by one owner's spending is a genuine discontinuity.
