Beijing Friendship Hotel

Beijing Friendship Hotel was built in 1954 to accommodate Soviet experts working in China. Its original purpose made hospitality part of an international technical relationship: the state needed somewhere for invited specialists to live while contributing to its development programme. The hotel began with an assigned community of residents rather than a general tourist market. [1, 2]

2 · BUILDING FOR THE EXPERTS

China’s National Government Offices Administration identifies Zhang Bo as the architect. Its anniversary account records completion of the main building in September 1954, followed by the northern and southern wings in December. This phased construction gives more substance to the founding year: accommodation was assembled as a substantial group of buildings, not inaugurated in one finished instant. [1]

3 · A BROADER PUBLIC

Initially an experts’ guesthouse in Beijing’s western suburbs, the establishment received the Friendship Hotel name in March 1956. Haidian’s heritage account dates its reception of foreign tourists to March 1973. The later role did not erase the earlier one, but it widened the circumstances in which an overseas visitor might arrive. [1, 2]

4 · GARDENS AND OFFICIAL RECEPTION

The hotel’s garden setting and Chinese architectural forms distinguish it from a single urban tower. Beijing’s tourism authority presents it as a place for accommodation, meetings and business in the Zhongguancun area. The government’s historical account also records its sustained use for official reception and as accommodation for members attending national political meetings. 5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

Friendship Hotel is a specific institution in the history of Sino-Soviet cooperation; it should not be treated as a Chinese version of the entire Intourist system. The sources establish an original purpose and later changes in clientele. They do not show that every foreign expert in China lived here or experienced identical conditions. [1, 2]
