Pendry Hotels & Resorts

Pendry Hotels & Resorts is the contemporary luxury lifestyle brand of Montage International, created to translate the parent company's service culture into a younger, more urban and socially energetic form. The first Pendry opened in San Diego in 2017, establishing a model built around sophisticated design, destination restaurants and bars, neighbourhood engagement and luxury service without excessive formality. Pendry is not positioned below Montage as a cheaper version: it is a distinct hospitality language — more metropolitan, more nightlife-aware, more fashion-conscious, and comfortable with the hotel functioning as a social address for locals as well as travellers.

The brand

Pendry sits within privately held Montage International, founded by Alan J. Fuerstman, with Michael Fuerstman central to creating the new-generation brand for guests who want design and social energy without abandoning high-touch hospitality.

The portfolio has expanded from San Diego into Baltimore, West Hollywood, Chicago, Park City, Washington D.C., Newport Beach and Tampa, combining city hotels with mountain and coastal resorts. Branded residences have become an important growth engine. The result is a brand that moves from an urban arts district to a ski destination or beachfront while keeping a recognisable combination of design, dining and social life.

Brand philosophy

Pendry's philosophy is the meeting of old-world hospitality and contemporary culture: service attentive and polished, reflecting Montage's luxury heritage, in an atmosphere intentionally less ceremonial. The hotel should understand the neighbourhood — its restaurants, nightlife, art, music and style.

Food and beverage are structural: properties typically operate multiple restaurant and bar concepts designed to attract a local audience, making lobby, rooftop, club and bar part of the hotel's identity and commercial ecosystem, while private guest spaces remain calm and refined.

What distinguishes it

Montage service DNA behind a lifestyle product. Contemporary design and social energy delivered with the discipline of a traditional luxury hotel company.

Restaurants and bars as brand architecture. The hotel is designed to become a local social destination, not an isolated accommodation product.

Urban and resort in one brand. San Diego and West Hollywood coexist with Park City and Newport Beach without a separate resort sub-brand.

Residential development is strategic. Pendry Residences create mixed hotel-residential communities across several destinations.

Consistency of attitude, not template. Each property responds to its architecture and neighbourhood rather than replicating one interior.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Pendry is a weaker fit for travellers seeking classical grand-hotel formality, palace architecture, extreme resort seclusion or a traditional points-driven chain experience. Public spaces can be socially active, with rooftops, bars and nightlife important to the environment; guests preferring quiet heritage hotels with minimal local traffic may favour another brand. Pendry works best for those who value design, dining, neighbourhood culture, contemporary American luxury and high-touch service delivered without stiffness.

⚑ A father built the luxury brand and his son built the second one. Montage was founded in January 2002 by Alan Fuerstman; in October 2014 the company launched Pendry, led by Michael Fuerstman, his eldest son. The first Pendry opened in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter in February 2017, ground having been broken in October 2014. The register holds few cases of a second brand created for and run by the founder’s child, and it is the clearest one.
And the child has outgrown the parent by count. As of 2026 Montage International runs fourteen properties across the United States and Mexico — six Montage and eight Pendry. The lifestyle brand launched twelve years later now has more houses than the luxury brand it was spun from, which is the same trajectory the register records at EDITION against Marriott’s core luxury line.
Candour. ⚑ This entry rests on general reference sources and no company history was read. Not established: the ownership of individual houses, which changes — Montage Laguna Beach was sold by Ohana Real Estate Investors in January 2015 — and whether the eight-property Pendry count includes houses announced but not open. Alan and Michael Fuerstman are not in Part IX.
