Tribute Portfolio is Marriott International's premium soft brand for independent hotels whose character, design and social life are intended to remain more visible than the collection flag. Launched by Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2015 and inherited by Marriott in the 2016 Starwood acquisition, Tribute Portfolio was created to give independent owners access to a global reservation and loyalty system without requiring them to adopt a conventional chain identity. Marriott's 2025 Annual Report records 162 Tribute Portfolio hotels with 30,074 rooms.
The Brand
Tribute Portfolio sits in Marriott's Premium tier, not its Luxury tier. That distinction is important: individual Tribute hotels can be highly luxurious, but the collection itself spans a wider premium lifestyle spectrum. Its closest internal relation is Autograph Collection, yet Tribute has historically leaned more strongly toward expressive design, neighbourhood energy and social public spaces. The hotel name remains primary. The collection acts as an endorsement layer: distribution, Marriott Bonvoy, digital systems and global sales sit behind properties that are expected to maintain their own visual and cultural identities. The brand therefore succeeds when the guest remembers the hotel itself rather than a repeated Tribute design template.
Philosophy
Tribute Portfolio's official positioning centres on independent hotels with captivating design and vibrant social scenes. The collection is intended for properties that feel connected to their neighbourhood and can attract local participation rather than functioning as sealed environments for travellers. Individuality is therefore behavioural as well as visual. A Tribute hotel should have a point of view expressed through architecture, interiors, food, bars, music, art or community programming. Marriott provides scale behind the scenes; the property is expected to provide personality in front of the guest.
What Distinguishes it
A softer soft brand Compared with a conventional Marriott flag, Tribute imposes less visible master-brand identity. Compared with Autograph Collection, its tone is generally more lifestyle-oriented and socially extroverted. Social scenes Bars, restaurants, rooftops and lobbies can be as important as guestrooms. The brand specifically values hotels that become part of local life. Captivating design Design does not need to follow one aesthetic, but it should be strong enough to create immediate character. A generic premium hotel weakens the collection's proposition. Independent identity with Bonvoy Owners can retain a distinctive hotel name while accessing Marriott's global distribution, reservations, sales and loyalty ecosystem. Broad geographic adaptability Because the brand standard is personality rather than architecture, Tribute can accommodate urban conversions, historic buildings, resort hotels and contemporary lifestyle projects.
Who it is Not For
Tribute Portfolio is not a promise of one consistent luxury experience. Travellers who want identical service rituals, room standards or facilities across destinations should choose a harder brand. It is also not the highest Marriott luxury tier: the individual hotel must be evaluated on its own merits. The collection is best suited to guests who value character, neighbourhood connection and design while still wanting Marriott Bonvoy and global booking infrastructure.

Editorial Note
Marriott International's 2025 Annual Report records 162 Tribute Portfolio hotels and 30,074 rooms at year-end 2025. LHL classifies Tribute Portfolio as Premium rather than Luxury because that is Marriott's current portfolio architecture; individual member hotels may nevertheless operate at luxury level. The brand was launched by Starwood in 2015 and became part of Marriott through the Starwood acquisition in 2016. Marriott Luminous participation is verified property by property.
