Every other entry in this Part descends from one decision taken in Hamburg in 1890: that a ship idle for the winter might be sent somewhere warm with paying passengers aboard.
Position
Albert Ballin ran the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft, and his flagship Augusta Victoria lay unused in the roadstead each winter, when few would cross the North Atlantic and freight orders thinned. His answer was to send her to the Mediterranean for six weeks with tourists. She sailed from Cuxhaven on 22 January 1891 on a fifty-seven-night voyage that Ballin organised and supervised himself.
⚑ What his colleagues said
They ridiculed him. One is recorded telling him that *Germans will travel out of necessity, but they would surely not submit themselves to the hazards and discomforts of a long voyage just for the incidental fun of it.* The Library keeps the sentence because it is the clearest statement anyone ever made of the assumption this industry was built by disproving: that travel is a cost to be minimised rather than the thing being bought.
Why it is in the Library
It is the origin, and it is documented. The voyage succeeded, three sister ships were put to the same use, and in 1899 Ballin commissioned Blohm & Voss to build the Prinzessin Victoria Luise — the first ship in history built as a cruise ship and nothing else, tailored to well-to-do passengers rather than adapted from a liner. Ritz-Carlton at sea in 2022, Four Seasons in 2026, Aman in 2027: all of it is this idea, restated. The expedition cruise followed from the same company in 1931.
The company since
HAPAG merged with its Bremen rival Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1970 — a rivalry of 113 years — and ended transatlantic passenger service. The first EUROPA came in 1981. The cruise division was spun off as an independent company in 1997 and acquired by TUI AG in 2017, keeping its Hamburg headquarters and separate management. EUROPA and EUROPA 2 are the only ships to have taken the five-stars-plus rating in the Berlitz guide; the three HANSEATIC expedition ships hold the highest ice class available to passenger vessels and were co-founders of IAATO.
What this model does not solve
It is a German-language product, and has been for a century and a third. That is the source of its consistency and the ceiling on its reach, and in 2026 the company is deliberately expanding its English-language offering — an admission that the thing which made it coherent also made it small. ⚑ Berlitz ratings are cited by the company from a guide that rates it; the Library records the award and its source rather than treating it as independent verification.
