An aircraft leaves Boeing or Airbus as a green tube with wiring and no floor. Jet Aviation Basel is where it becomes somewhere to live.
Position
Founded in Switzerland in 1967 and completing interiors since 1977, Jet Aviation has built around four hundred custom cabins, roughly half of them at Basel, including some seventy narrow- and wide-body ACJ and BBJ interiors. It took the first BBJ 787-9 ever delivered for completion, and runs an acoustic laboratory built specifically to manage the trade-off between cabin sound and weight.
Why it is in the Library
Because this is where the hospitality happens. The airframe manufacturers sell a shell; the hotel-grade decision — where the master suite goes, whether there is a shower or a hammam, how quiet the cabin is at cruise — is taken here, by people who are not in the aviation business in any sense a passenger would recognise. A completion centre is a hotel builder that happens to work at 41,000 feet, and the Library files it accordingly.
What this model does not solve
A one-off interior takes years and cannot be revised in service without another programme; the guest is buying a decision made before the aircraft existed. And weight is the constraint no hotel has: every kilogram of marble is a kilogram of range, which is why aviation interiors imitate stone rather than use it.
