The Langham

The Langham opened on London's Regent Street in 1865 as Europe's first purpose-built grand hotel — the original grande dame, host to Wilde, Twain and the invention of afternoon tea as ritual. Today the name is the luxury flagship of Langham Hospitality Group, owned by Hong Kong's Great Eagle Holdings, with hotels from London and New York's Fifth Avenue to Chicago's Mies tower, Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Jakarta. The brand carries Victorian hospitality heritage under Asian stewardship into a two-hemisphere network.

The brand

Langham Hospitality Group runs The Langham as its luxury tier, alongside Cordis and emerging lifestyle lines. The collection pairs true heritage houses — London's original, the palm-court tradition — with contemporary landmarks: The Langham Chicago inside Mies van der Rohe's IBM tower is repeatedly ranked among America's best city hotels; New York holds Fifth Avenue; Asia-Pacific spans Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Jakarta, Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast.

The register is classic luxury modernised: afternoon tea and pink-toned grande-dame codes where heritage supports them, clean contemporary luxury where architecture leads. Chuan Spa and strong dining — including Michelin-starred Cantonese at T'ang Court — give the brand operational signatures across markets.

Brand philosophy

The Langham's philosophy is heritage as living standard: the 1865 house's rituals — tea, service ceremony, residential grandeur — are treated as a portable tradition rather than a museum, re-expressed in each city's idiom.

East-West stewardship is the second thread: Hong Kong ownership has globalised a London institution without dissolving it, pairing British codes with Asian service depth and wellness through Chuan's TCM-based spas.

What distinguishes it

The original grande dame. 1865 Regent Street is where the European grand hotel began; the brand owns that primacy.

Afternoon tea as institution. Palm-court tea remains a brand signature performed across the network.

Chicago in Mies. The IBM-tower Langham is a modernist landmark hotel of the first rank — heritage brand, contemporary masterpiece.

Chuan Spa's TCM depth. Traditional-Chinese-medicine wellness distinguishes the brand's spa proposition.

Two-hemisphere balance. Genuine strength in both Europe/America and Asia-Pacific is rarer than it sounds at this scale.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

The Langham is a weak fit for travellers seeking resort destinations, minimalist design or lifestyle informality — the register is classic city luxury with ceremony intact. Guests wanting beach and safari breadth, or the ultra tier's suite scale and staffing, should look to the specialist and summit brands; The Langham serves those who want the grand-hotel tradition, kept current, in the world's centres.
