Opening
Emerald Collection is an Italian family-owned luxury resort group whose modern brand was founded in 2013 but draws on more than four decades of hospitality experience. The Collection’s clearest contemporary identity has been built in the Indian Ocean around five-star resort design, high-quality all-inclusive hospitality and a deliberately relaxed interpretation of luxury. Its two Maldivian flagships — Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa and Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa — are both members of The Leading Hotels of the World and demonstrate the brand’s distinctive combination of private-island geography, international gastronomy, family capability and what Emerald calls Natural or Barefoot Elegance.
The Scarapicchia Family
Emerald Collection is led by the Italian Scarapicchia family. Public corporate material links the family’s hospitality history to more than forty years of travel and resort development experience, beginning with ski tours and winter holidays before expansion into resort construction and management in Kenya, Zanzibar, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The family structure is important to the brand. Emerald is not conceived as a rapidly franchised global chain; it has historically emphasized direct involvement in development, ownership, operating concepts and guest experience.
2013 — Creation of The Emerald Collection
The Emerald Collection was officially founded in 2013. The new identity brought the family’s earlier resort experience into a more coherent luxury hospitality platform designed for international leisure markets.
For LHL, 2013 should therefore be treated as the foundation of the current Emerald Collection brand, while the family’s earlier hospitality activity belongs to the pre-history and explains the stated forty-plus years of expertise.
From Tour Operating to Resort Development
The Scarapicchia family’s background in travel preceded the current hotel brand. Experience in winter tourism, tour operating and international resort markets created a vertically informed approach to hospitality: destination selection, construction, distribution and hotel operation were understood as connected parts of the same business.
This background helps explain Emerald’s strong emphasis on a complete holiday proposition rather than room-only luxury.
The Maldives as the Brand Laboratory
The Maldives became the clearest laboratory for the modern Emerald formula. Rather than entering with a small ultra-exclusive retreat, Emerald built substantial private-island resorts capable of serving couples and families while maintaining high villa quality, strong dining and extensive inclusions.
The Maldives therefore defines the brand more strongly today than any other geography.
Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa
Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa is the foundational flagship of the current Maldivian portfolio. Located in Raa Atoll on a lush 20-hectare private island, the resort has 120 villas — 60 on the island and 60 over water — surrounded by approximately 1.5 kilometres of white sand.
The property combines significant scale with a five-star luxury proposition and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
Natural and Informal Elegance
Emerald Maldives expresses the group’s design philosophy through natural materials including bamboo, stone and traditional leaves, combined with contemporary resort architecture. The stated atmosphere is one of Natural and Informal Elegance.
This phrase is central to understanding Emerald. The brand does not seek heavy formality or grand-hotel theatre; luxury is intended to feel visually refined, tropical, comfortable and easy.
Deluxe All-Inclusive
The Deluxe All-Inclusive formula is the most important operating signature of Emerald Collection. It extends well beyond buffet meals to include gourmet à-la-carte dining, premium wines and spirits, minibar, non-motorised water activities and a broad set of resort amenities and experiences.
The commercial logic is powerful in island destinations: guests receive a luxury environment while much of the normal transactional friction of resort spending is removed.
Gastronomy as an All-Inclusive Differentiator
Emerald uses gastronomy to separate Deluxe All-Inclusive from mass-market all-inclusive. Emerald Maldives combines international dining with Mediterranean, Latin American and Asian concepts; the objective is to reproduce distinct culinary traditions rather than simply provide variety through generic outlets.
This is particularly important for long-stay island resorts, where restaurant repetition can quickly weaken the guest experience.
Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa
Emerald Faarufushi opened on 1 October 2022 as the Collection’s second Maldivian resort. It occupies a private seven-hectare island in Raa Atoll, surrounded by roughly 1.2 kilometres of beach and a 100-hectare lagoon with a significant natural coral reef.
The resort has 80 villas, divided between beach and overwater accommodation, with a strong proportion featuring private pools.
Barefoot Elegance
Faarufushi develops the Emerald aesthetic into a more minimal and intimate register described as Barefoot Elegance. Stone, wood and natural textures combine with contemporary lines and a lighter visual language than many traditional tropical resorts.
The smaller island and lower villa count make Faarufushi a useful complement to Emerald Maldives rather than a duplicate.
Two Resorts in Raa Atoll
Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi are both in Raa Atoll and can be reached from one another by boat. This creates the basis for an integrated two-resort Maldives experience.
For repeat guests or longer stays, the pair offers a rational contrast: Emerald Maldives provides greater scale and broad resort choice; Faarufushi offers a smaller, more refined and reef-focused atmosphere.
Leading Hotels of the World
Both current Maldivian resorts are members of The Leading Hotels of the World. The affiliation gives an independent family-owned group international luxury distribution, quality signaling and recognition without replacing the Emerald identity.
For LHL, LHW should be treated as an affiliation layer rather than the master brand.
Families Without Losing Luxury
Emerald deliberately designs its villas and resort infrastructure to work for both couples and families. Faarufushi’s accommodation planning, Dolphin Kids Club and broad activities demonstrate that family capability is not confined to a separate mass-market tier.
This places Emerald in a valuable segment between romantic Maldivian luxury and sophisticated family all-inclusive.
Spa and Wellness
Emerald Spa forms the wellness layer of the resorts. At Faarufushi, treatment rooms are elevated within the vegetation and accompanied by yoga, relaxation and beauty facilities. Wellness supports the holiday rather than functioning as a medical or longevity destination.
The brand’s strongest wellness proposition is therefore integration: nature, movement, spa and island calm.
Diving, Reef and Water Sports
Marine experiences are fundamental to the Emerald product. Faarufushi’s large lagoon and natural reef, professional diving facilities and non-motorised water sports fit naturally inside the Deluxe All-Inclusive concept.
The ocean is not simply a view; it is one of the principal experience platforms of the resorts.
Sport and Active Leisure
Tennis, padel, fitness and water sports broaden Emerald beyond passive beach luxury. The resorts are designed for guests who may combine high-end dining and private villas with active daily routines.
This breadth is especially useful for families and longer stays, where activity choice becomes an important component of perceived value.
Emerald Zanzibar — The East African Chapter
Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa opened in late 2022 on Zanzibar’s northeast coast near Matemwe, facing Mnemba Island. Contemporary sources describe a large all-suite five-star resort of approximately 250 accommodations across a ten-hectare coastal site, with restaurants, spa, diving and Deluxe All-Inclusive hospitality.
The property demonstrated that the Emerald formula could be transferred from Maldivian private islands to East Africa while responding to Swahili and tropical context.
Zanzibar Portfolio Status — Important 2026 Note
The current Emerald Collection homepage creates a portfolio-status ambiguity that should not be ignored. It currently presents Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi as the two bookable resorts and separately labels a “New Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa” as Coming Soon. This conflicts with well-documented evidence that an Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa opened in 2022.
LHL should therefore avoid silently treating the older Zanzibar property and the current coming-soon project as the same current asset. The Zanzibar chapter should be monitored property by property until Emerald clarifies the new structure publicly.
Development as a Core Competence
Emerald Collection describes itself not only as an operator but as a group specialized in developing and operating luxury resorts. The family’s model has historically involved substantial direct participation in design, construction, concept creation and operations.
This integrated approach helps maintain consistency but naturally limits the speed at which a family-owned group can expand.
Architecture and Destination Response
Emerald properties are not intended to reproduce one fixed architectural template. The Maldives resorts emphasize natural tropical materials and light contemporary design; Zanzibar incorporated African and local references into a much larger coastal resort.
The recurring design principle is harmony with the setting rather than visual uniformity.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
The official Emerald philosophy explicitly references energy efficiency and environmental preservation. Earlier Zanzibar development material also described solar energy, reduced plastic use and water-production measures, while the Maldivian properties emphasize natural materials and environmental management.
For island and coastal resorts, these measures are not peripheral. Energy, water, reef health, waste and construction impact directly affect both operating economics and destination value.
Service — Refined but Non-Invasive
Emerald’s service language is notable for emphasizing attentiveness without intrusion. Management commentary around Faarufushi has described refined but non-invasive service as part of the formula that resonated strongly with European guests.
This fits the wider brand identity: high standards without excessive ceremony.
European Luxury DNA in Tropical Resorts
Emerald is an Italian-owned group serving highly international resort markets. Its product combines Mediterranean sensibility in food and design with Asian and African resort operations and local destination context.
The result is not an explicitly Italian-themed hotel brand, but an international luxury collection with a discernible European approach to cuisine, materials and informality.
Loyalty and Recognition
No formal collection-wide proprietary points or elite-status programme is currently central to Emerald Collection’s public proposition. Guest recognition is instead driven through direct relationships, repeat stays, luxury distribution and property-level guest history.
For LHL, the current Loyalty classification should therefore be None. The Leading Hotels of the World affiliation of the Maldivian resorts should be recorded separately as third-party affiliation, not as Emerald’s own loyalty programme.
Luxury Positioning
Emerald Collection sits firmly in luxury resort hospitality, but its defining proposition is not ultra-luxury scarcity. The brand combines high-quality villas and suites, extensive facilities, family capability and sophisticated all-inclusive structures at meaningful resort scale.
For LHL, Emerald is best classified as an Italian Family-Owned Luxury All-Inclusive Resort Developer & Operator with a strong Indian Ocean identity.
What Distinguishes Emerald Collection
ITALIAN FAMILY OWNERSHIP. The Scarapicchia family provides continuity and direct strategic involvement.
DELUXE ALL-INCLUSIVE. A high-value luxury formula is central rather than peripheral.
NATURAL / BAREFOOT ELEGANCE. Contemporary design is intended to remain relaxed and destination-responsive.
MALDIVES DEPTH. Two complementary Raa Atoll resorts form the clearest current brand expression.
LHW AFFILIATION. Both Maldivian properties carry international independent-luxury recognition.
FAMILY + COUPLES. Villas, kids’ facilities, sport and gastronomy broaden the addressable luxury market.
DEVELOP + OPERATE. Emerald’s competence extends beyond management into resort creation.
CONTROLLED EXPANSION. The family model favors integrity and direct involvement over rapid flag proliferation.
What the Model Does Not Solve
The main strategic challenge is scale versus control. A family-owned developer-operator can preserve product integrity, but expansion is capital-intensive and slower than asset-light global chains.
The second challenge is portfolio clarity. The current official homepage’s Zanzibar presentation does not align cleanly with the documented 2022 opening history. Until the group clarifies whether this represents a replacement, redevelopment, new project or portfolio transition, LHL should keep the status explicitly qualified.

Booking with LVXVRY
Emerald should be booked at property and villa-category level. At Emerald Maldives, island scale, villa location and family composition matter; at Faarufushi, reef access, sunset orientation, pool configuration and the smaller-island atmosphere are central. The Deluxe All-Inclusive inclusions are a major component of value and should be compared carefully with room-rate-only luxury competitors. Any Zanzibar booking should be checked against the current operating entity and property status because the Collection’s 2026 public portfolio presentation is in transition.
Editorial Note
This entry reflects official Emerald Collection information and supporting industry sources reviewed in August 2026. The Collection’s official homepage states that the group was founded in 2013, is Italian family-owned and has more than forty years of luxury hospitality expertise. It currently presents Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa and Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa as bookable five-star resorts and a New Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa as Coming Soon. Separate reliable sources document an Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa opening in December 2022. LHL therefore records the 2022 Zanzibar property as an important historical/current-status chapter but does not assume continuity with the new Coming Soon project without further official clarification. No proprietary collection-wide loyalty programme is currently confirmed.
