1 · POSITION
Established in 1929, Intourist organised foreign tourism in the Soviet Union through a state institution. Travel arrangements, accommodation and the presentation of the country could consequently belong to the same administrative system. Its place in hospitality history rests on that combination: receiving a visitor was also an organised encounter with the state. [1, 2]
2 · ROOMS AND ROUTES
The Russian archival guide records Intourist’s creation under the foreign-trade administration and its 1933 merger with the hotel organisation Otel. That merger brought foreign tourism together with an institution responsible for constructing, repairing and operating hotels and catering establishments. Reception required both an itinerary and the buildings and services that made the itinerary practicable. [2]
3 · THE PEOPLE RECEIVING VISITORS
The archive also documents responsibilities for training tourism personnel. Its holdings include reports by guide-interpreters, overseas representatives and regional offices. These records make the institution visible at several levels: staff explaining a city, offices arranging travel and administrators maintaining a national organisation. The hotel room was one element in a much larger service. [2]
4 · A COUNTRY IN PRINT
A German-language Moscow leaflet preserved by the DDR Museum gives this system a small, tangible form. Published by Intourist in the USSR, it assembled images and information for readers abroad. Such material is evidence of how a destination was presented, rather than a neutral record of every experience available within it. The invitation began before the journey. [3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
The corporate anniversary falls on 12 April 1929; the archival guide dates the founding resolution to 11 April. These are distinct reference points. This entry concerns the Soviet institution. Continuation of the Intourist name in contemporary travel does not establish unchanged ownership, legal identity or operating conditions across the intervening period. [1, 2]
