Tswalu means ‘a new beginning’ in Tswana, and the Oppenheimer family’s stated aim was to restore the Kalahari to itself. The Foundation funds long-term ecological research from the Dedeben Research Centre — a police post until 1990, derelict until Tswalu took it over in 2000 — and hosts scientists from academic institutions across the year. Work has covered pangolin ecology and physiology, aardvark, meerkat habituation, cape cobra thermal ecology, sociable weavers, lichen diversity, butterfly monitoring and the effect of climate change on an arid savanna.
2 · Why it is in the Library
The mechanism is distinct from the rest of the group. The Foundation makes its findings freely available to Tswalu’s neighbours so that they can manage their own land better — research as a public good rather than a marketing asset. A lodge that funds science and then gives it away is a model, and models are what the Library admits.
