W Hotels

W Hotels was born in New York in 1998 and became one of the hotel industry's most consequential lifestyle brands. Created under Barry Sternlicht's Starwood Hotels & Resorts, W rejected the conventional business-hotel lobby in favour of music, bars, design, fashion, nightlife and a deliberately social public realm. Marriott's 2025 Annual Report records 72 W Hotels with 20,233 rooms at year-end 2025. The live W platform has continued expanding in 2026, while the brand itself is in the middle of a broad global reinvention.

The Brand

W Hotels is a corporate Marriott International brand in the company's luxury portfolio. Its historical importance is larger than its current hotel count: W helped make 'lifestyle hotel' a scalable global category. The original formula translated the energy of New York nightlife and boutique hospitality into a chain architecture that could travel through Starwood's development and loyalty systems. Today's W is deliberately moving away from some of the clichés created by its own success. The current brand proposition is 'Luxury, Liberated': design-forward, more local and more personal, while retaining the community connections and social energy that have defined W since its origin. The reinvention is visible in major renovations, reopened flagships and new resorts from New York Union Square to Punta Cana, Florence, Prague, Sardinia and Riyadh.

Philosophy

W defines luxury as freedom: the freedom to be oneself, pursue what one wants and move between high-energy social life and moments of reflection without conventional luxury rules. This is a significant repositioning. The old W vocabulary often foregrounded spectacle and nightlife; the current language attempts to preserve energy while adding sophistication, locality and emotional ease. Whatever/Whenever remains the clearest service signature. It translates lifestyle informality into a service promise: requests should be handled with energy, personalisation and a willingness to make things happen. At its best, this makes W less stiff than traditional luxury. At its weakest, informality can become inconsistency unless operational standards remain strong.

What Distinguishes it

Whatever/Whenever W's named service philosophy is the most durable piece of the original brand system. It promises personalised problem-solving without the ceremonial vocabulary of a butler or classic grand hotel. The Living Room W replaced the traditional lobby with a social 'Living Room'. This was not merely terminology: the lobby became a bar, meeting place, music environment and local social stage. Music Music has been structural to W rather than decorative. DJs, playlists, live programming and nightlife helped the brand connect hotels with contemporary culture and local audiences. Fashion and design W has historically collaborated with designers, artists and fashion communities and continues to use highly authored interiors. The current reinvention places more emphasis on local context and less on repeating a universal W look. Luxury resorts with lifestyle energy W has successfully moved from city nightlife into beach and alpine resorts. Bali, Verbier, Costa Navarino, Algarve, Punta de Mita and newer all-inclusive and Mediterranean properties show how the social model can operate in leisure destinations.

Who it is Not For

W is not the natural choice for a traveller who wants quiet classic luxury, discreet ceremony or a hotel that withdraws completely from local social life. Public spaces can be active, music matters and the brand deliberately courts non-resident guests. Travellers who prefer the formality of St. Regis, the service discipline of Ritz-Carlton, the quiet restraint of Park Hyatt or the seclusion of Aman may find W too extroverted. The reinvention has made the brand more sophisticated, but it has not made it anonymous.

Signature Houses

W New York · New York

The original Lexington Avenue hotel established the brand and helped turn the social lobby and lifestyle language into a scalable hotel model. The property later closed, but its historical importance remains foundational.

W Mexico City · Mexico City

An early international expression that demonstrated W could translate New York-born lifestyle energy into a different cultural and design context.

W Barcelona · Barcelona

Ricardo Bofill's sail-shaped waterfront tower became one of the brand's most recognisable architectural icons and a defining European W.

W Bali - Seminyak · Bali

A resort landmark where pool, beach, music, restaurants and nightlife created a highly successful tropical interpretation of the W social model.

W Verbier · Switzerland

The brand's alpine expression proved that W could operate in a ski resort, combining chalet references, nightlife and contemporary luxury.

W New York - Union Square · New York

The comprehensively reimagined Union Square property is strategically important to the current reinvention: W returns to its birthplace with Rockwell Group and AvroKO interpreting New York history, performance and social energy through a more mature design language.

Editorial Note

Marriott International's 2025 Annual Report records 72 W Hotels / 20,233 rooms at year-end 2025. The current W hotel directory reviewed in August 2026 reflects continued expansion and newly opened or reimagined properties, so LHL uses the audited year-end figure as the stable portfolio count and dates newer openings individually. W is classified corporate — Marriott International; Barry Sternlicht is retained as the brand creator through the Starwood era. The current brand proposition and service language were reviewed against W's official 'About W' and hotel directory.
