EDITION is the collaboration that brought Ian Schrager's boutique-hotel logic into Marriott International's global operating system. The partnership was announced in 2007 and the first EDITION opened in Honolulu in 2010. After a turbulent first phase, the concept found its durable form in properties such as The London EDITION, Miami Beach and New York. Marriott reported 22 EDITION hotels with 4,617 rooms at year-end 2025; the live EDITION destination platform in August 2026 shows 23 operating hotels after The Dali EDITION joined the network.
The Brand
EDITION is a corporate Marriott International luxury brand conceived in partnership with Ian Schrager. Marriott supplies global development, operations, distribution, reservations and Marriott Bonvoy; Schrager supplies the founding creative thesis: individualized hotels with strong design, restaurants, bars, entertainment and public spaces that attract locals as well as travellers. The brand itself calls the result an 'anti-hotel chain' — a global collection in which no two cities, and therefore no two hotels, should be alike. The current operating map spans North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and the Middle East: Miami Beach, New York, Riviera Maya, Tampa, Times Square, West Hollywood; Barcelona, Bodrum, Lake Como, London, Madrid, Reykjavik, Rome; Dali, Sanya, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo Ginza, Tokyo Toranomon; Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah and the Red Sea. Cape Town and a substantial pipeline across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas show that EDITION has moved decisively from experimental partnership to global luxury platform.
Philosophy
EDITION's proposition is 'a new generation of luxury'. The official idea combines the personal, intimate and individualized experience associated with Schrager with Marriott's scale and operational expertise. Design alone is insufficient: each hotel is intended to be a microcosm of its city, bringing together service, food, beverage, entertainment and social energy under one roof. The service proposition is modern rather than ceremonial. EDITION defines true luxury as being heard before the guest speaks: personalized, gracious service without the visible ritual system of St. Regis or the codified service vocabulary of Ritz-Carlton. The best EDITION hotels feel effortless even though the operating machinery behind them is substantial.
What Distinguishes it
The anti-hotel chain EDITION's most important rule is controlled difference. The London townhouse, Miami Beach resort, New York clocktower, Bodrum coast and Tokyo towers share an emotional attitude but should not look like one standardized chain. Public spaces as the product Schrager's historic contribution to hospitality was to make the lobby, bar, restaurant and nightclub culturally important. EDITION updates that model for luxury: locals should have a reason to enter even when they are not sleeping at the hotel. Food, beverage and entertainment Restaurants and bars are not support facilities. Collaborations with chefs and highly programmed social spaces are intended to give each property an independent life in its city. Design with operational scale The strategic innovation is the marriage of creative individuality with Marriott's global infrastructure. EDITION can build highly authored hotels while still offering Bonvoy, global sales and a large development pipeline. Luxury without traditional ceremony EDITION is polished but intentionally less formal than classic luxury. It replaces butlers, tea rituals and grand-lobby choreography with atmosphere, music, design, social relevance and intuitive service.
Who it is Not For
EDITION is not the natural choice for a guest who wants traditional grand-hotel ritual, highly visible formality or a quiet property designed mainly for privacy. Its restaurants, bars and lobbies can be socially active, and the brand deliberately wants locals and guests to mix. Travellers who prefer the ceremonial reassurance of St. Regis, the service-system clarity of Ritz-Carlton or the retreat psychology of Aman may find EDITION too lifestyle-led.

Editorial Note
Marriott's 2025 Annual Report records 22 EDITION properties and 4,617 rooms at year-end 2025. The live EDITION destination platform reviewed in August 2026 lists 23 operating destinations after Dali opened; Cape Town remains explicitly 'Coming Soon'. The first opening is recorded as Waikiki EDITION in 2010 for historical accuracy, although that hotel later left the system; the durable modern expansion is best understood from London 2013 onward. Ownership is classified corporate — Marriott International, while Ian Schrager is retained as the concept creator and creative author.
