SIXTY Hotels is the independent boutique-luxury continuation of the Pomeranc family's original Thompson Hotels story. Its roots go back to 60 Thompson in SoHo in 2001; the SIXTY name was launched in 2013 after Jason Pomeranc sold his interest in the Thompson brand and retained several core properties. The current live network is compact: SIXTY SoHo, SIXTY LES, SIXTY Beverly Hills and SIXTY DC.
Why SIXTY Matters
The brand belongs to the generation that moved American boutique hotels from quirky small inns into sophisticated urban lifestyle businesses connected with fashion, entertainment, restaurants, nightlife and residential design.
The Pomeranc Family
Jason, Michael and Lawrence Pomeranc are the central founding figures. Their hotel story developed out of the family's New York real-estate business and a belief that hospitality could function as a cultural product.
Jason Pomeranc
Jason became the best-known creative and public figure. His career combines real estate, law, hotel development, design curation and cultural collaboration rather than conventional hotel-company progression.
2001 - 60 Thompson
The story begins with 60 Thompson in SoHo, opened in 2001. It became the flagship from which Thompson Hotels grew.
Thompson Hotels
The Pomeranc-led Thompson platform expanded into a significant boutique-hotel collection and became one of the formative American lifestyle brands of the 2000s.
2011 - Commune
Thompson Hotels merged with Joie de Vivre and Geolo Capital interests to form Commune Hotels & Resorts. Jason Pomeranc served as co-chair during this chapter.
2013 - Separation
In August 2013, Pomeranc sold his interest in the Thompson brand and Commune while retaining four core hotel assets associated with the original portfolio.
The Four Core Properties
The retained group comprised 60 Thompson, Thompson Lower East Side, 6 Columbus and Thompson Beverly Hills. These became the foundation of SIXTY Hotels.
2013 - SIXTY Announced
The new brand was announced in late 2013 under SIXTY Collective, with rebranding taking effect in 2014.
A More Mature Boutique Brand
At launch, Jason Pomeranc described SIXTY as a more mature and sophisticated evolution with a heightened sense of residential living while retaining the stylish cultural pulse of the earlier hotels.
Residential Living
Residential design is one of the clearest recurring codes. Rooms use hardwood floors, sitting areas, custom furnishings and suites described as places to live rather than simply sleep.
Culture Without Nostalgia
The original manifesto explicitly rejected becoming stuck in nostalgia. SIXTY can reference enduring fashion, music and design culture, but must keep evolving.
Current Portfolio - August 2026
The current official destination architecture and property pages support four live SIXTY-branded hotels: SoHo, Lower East Side, Beverly Hills and Washington DC.
Why Portfolio Dating Matters
Older directories still list 6 Columbus and other historical SIXTY properties. LHL uses the current live consumer site for the operating portfolio and retains older hotels in the historical narrative.
SIXTY SoHo
SIXTY SoHo is the direct descendant of 60 Thompson and remains the emotional flagship of the brand.
97 Rooms and Suites
The current official page lists 97 guestrooms and suites, making SoHo an intimate urban hotel rather than a large lifestyle tower.
SoHo as Brand Geography
SoHo connects the brand to fashion, art, design, restaurants and downtown New York street culture - the industries and audiences that shaped the Pomeranc philosophy.
Art by Harland Miller
The current SoHo platform highlights artwork by Harland Miller, reinforcing the idea that art is part of the guest environment rather than generic decoration.
Bistrot Leo
Bistrot Leo provides the current French dining anchor and gives the hotel a public neighborhood-facing restaurant layer.
Butterfly
Butterfly adds a more intimate club-room and cocktail dimension to the SoHo social ecosystem.
The Rooftop
The seasonal rooftop turns skyline and sunset into a social asset and extends the hotel's relevance beyond overnight guests.
The SIXTY Thompson Name
The current room inventory still uses names such as SIXTY Thompson Suite and SIXTY Thompson Loft, preserving a deliberate memory of the original 60 Thompson identity.
SIXTY Thompson Loft
The 1,800-square-foot Thompson Loft with roof deck is the residential apex of SoHo and embodies the preference for private urban living over formal presidential-suite language.
SIXTY LES
SIXTY LES is the more energetic and nightlife-oriented New York expression.
Lower East Side Energy
The official brand language describes LES as the most vibrant and pulsating SIXTY location, with DJ-curated music and an all-hours downtown character.
Design at LES
Floor-to-ceiling windows, black mirrored walls, hardwood floors and slate bathrooms create a more graphic contemporary environment than SoHo.
Residential Suites at LES
Large categories include 1,200-square-foot suites and a 2,000-square-foot duplex SIXTY Loft, shifting the hotel from compact city rooms into apartment-scale hospitality.
The Pool
The guest-only outdoor pool is one of LES's defining assets and famously incorporates Andy Warhol's visage at the bottom.
SIXTY Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills translates the brand into West Coast casual luxury.
California Reimagining
Current rooms use earth tones, limewash walls, blond herringbone floors, saddle-leather headboards and custom Moroccan rugs.
Refined, Not Formal
The official proposition is relaxed and modern rather than old Beverly Hills ceremony. Luxury comes from materials, location, comfort and social ease.
Rooftop Beverly Hills
The rooftop provides panoramic Los Angeles views and is a principal social differentiator in a dense urban luxury market.
Suites and Penthouse
The current inventory extends into suites and a roughly 1,100-square-foot Penthouse with living and dining space, balconies and city views.
West Coast Casual
Beverly Hills demonstrates how SIXTY adapts its residential language to place: lighter woods, warmer natural tones and a less metropolitan rhythm than New York.
SIXTY DC
SIXTY DC is the newest chapter and the first major current expansion beyond New York and Los Angeles.
October 2025 Opening
Public Washington records document the hotel's opening celebration on 15 October 2025.
73 Rooms
The Golden Triangle BID and Michelin Guide identify SIXTY DC as a 73-room luxury boutique hotel.
Office-to-Hotel Conversion
The project converted an underutilized office building at 1337 Connecticut Avenue into a hotel, making adaptive reuse part of the brand's newest chapter.
Dupont Circle
The location places SIXTY near Embassy Row, The Phillips Collection, restaurants, bars and Washington's residential and diplomatic social life.
DC Beyond Politics
The hotel's official positioning emphasizes culture, conversation and connection, presenting Washington as a cosmopolitan social city rather than only a government destination.
Casamara
Casamara provides Mediterranean dining and a rooftop layer, creating a destination restaurant for visitors and local residents.
Reynold's
Reynold's is the moody cocktail bar, bringing retro glamour and a more intimate nighttime atmosphere to the ground floor.
The Treasury Suite
The current room platform includes a 2,000-square-foot Treasury Suite, giving the small hotel a substantial residential top category.
Energy-Efficient Conversion
DC Green Bank documents high-efficiency HVAC, improved insulation, LED lighting and water-efficient fixtures financed through C-PACE.
Sustainability Through Reuse
SIXTY DC's strongest sustainability story is pragmatic: reusing an office building and improving its energy performance instead of constructing an entirely new hotel.
Four Hotels, Four Rhythms
SoHo is sophisticated downtown residential luxury; LES is energetic nightlife; Beverly Hills is relaxed California glamour; DC is cosmopolitan Dupont social hospitality.
No Universal Design Prototype
SIXTY is not held together by one room package. Consistency comes from residential comfort, artful design, social food and beverage and a culturally aware urban guest.
Personalised Service
The brand repeatedly emphasizes highly personalized service. In a small independent collection, recognition can substitute for a large loyalty infrastructure.
The Urban Retreat
Each SIXTY is positioned as a retreat inside a major city rather than a resort removed from it.
Artists-in-Residence Philosophy
Historical SIXTY language described guests as artists-in-residence who make the experience their own canvas. The metaphor captures the preference for individual expression over rigid hotel choreography.
Fashion and Entertainment
From the Thompson era onward, fashion and entertainment have been core audience and cultural reference points for the Pomeranc hotels.
Restaurants and Bars
Food and beverage gives locals a reason to participate and makes the hotel part of city nightlife rather than a closed lodging product.
Rooftops
SoHo, Beverly Hills and DC all use rooftops or elevated social space as a recurring urban luxury device.
Nightlife Without Becoming a Club Brand
SIXTY is socially aware and nightlife-friendly but remains fundamentally a hotel brand rather than a membership club or nightclub platform.
The Room as Residence
Hardwood floors, seating, desks, terraces and large loft categories reinforce the idea that the room should feel privately inhabitable.
No Conventional Loyalty Programme
No proprietary points-and-tiers loyalty programme is identified on the current official consumer platform. SIXTY relies on direct offers, repeat relationships and property-level recognition.
The Advantage of Independence
SIXTY can change restaurants, design details and local programming without conforming to a large-chain global standard.
The Disadvantage of Independence
A four-hotel network has limited distribution power and loyalty utility compared with Marriott, Hyatt or Accor lifestyle brands.
Comparison with Thompson Hotels
Thompson is the direct historical relative. Under Hyatt, Thompson now has global distribution and World of Hyatt; SIXTY remains smaller, family-authored and closer to the original Pomeranc residential boutique idea.
Comparison with Ace Hotel
Ace is more democratic, neighborhood-oriented and culturally rough-edged. SIXTY is more polished, residential and traditionally luxury in room and service positioning.
Comparison with The Standard
The Standard is more provocative, fashion-forward and nightlife-dominant. SIXTY is more private, residential and controlled.
Comparison with Proper Hotels
Proper is more design-authored through Kelly Wearstler and increasingly wellness-led. SIXTY is more directly descended from early-2000s New York boutique luxury and fashion / entertainment culture.
Comparison with PUBLIC
PUBLIC is Ian Schrager's value-engineered Luxury for All proposition. SIXTY is less ideological about price and more conventionally boutique-luxury in service and residential comfort.
Comparison with The LINE
The LINE emphasizes neighborhood immersion and local cultural infrastructure. SIXTY is more polished and inwardly residential while still using restaurants, rooftops and nightlife to connect with its city.
The Advantage of Heritage
The brand can legitimately trace its DNA to 60 Thompson and the original Thompson Hotels movement, giving it more than two decades of boutique-hotel history.
The Risk of Heritage
A brand born from early-2000s boutique culture can become nostalgic if it relies too heavily on the social codes that once made Thompson Hotels new.
The Advantage of a New DC Chapter
SIXTY DC demonstrates that the brand is still capable of expansion and reinvention rather than simply managing legacy New York and Beverly Hills assets.
The Risk of Portfolio Ambiguity
Historical SIXTY hotels remain visible in third-party directories, making current scale easy to misstate. Clear dating and live-site verification are essential.
The Risk of Lifestyle Convergence
Residential rooms, rooftops, DJs, art and local restaurants are now standard lifestyle-hotel tools. SIXTY must differentiate through execution, service and cultural credibility.
The Risk of Founder Dependence
Jason Pomeranc remains strongly associated with the brand's creative identity. Long-term durability requires the philosophy to remain coherent beyond individual founder presence.
The Risk of Small Scale
Four hotels create intimacy but also concentration. The departure or underperformance of one property can materially change the brand's perceived network.
What the Model Does Not Solve
Residential styling does not automatically create intimacy, cultural references do not automatically create relevance, and independence does not guarantee better service. A small network has weak loyalty economics and limited geographic reach, while the boutique codes SIXTY helped pioneer are now widely copied. The brand works when each hotel feels privately comfortable, socially connected and genuinely tuned to its city.
What Distinguishes SIXTY Hotels
ROOTS IN 60 THOMPSON, OPENED IN SOHO IN 2001. SIXTY HOTELS LAUNCHED BY JASON, MICHAEL AND LAWRENCE POMERANC IN 2013 AFTER THE THOMPSON / COMMUNE SEPARATION. CURRENT LIVE PORTFOLIO: SIXTY SOHO, SIXTY LES, SIXTY BEVERLY HILLS AND SIXTY DC. RESIDENTIAL LUXURY, PERSONALIZED SERVICE, FASHION / ENTERTAINMENT CULTURE, ART, RESTAURANTS, ROOFTOPS AND NIGHTLIFE AS CORE CODES. SIXTY DC, A 73-ROOM OFFICE-TO-HOTEL CONVERSION, OPENED IN OCTOBER 2025.
The Strategic Achievement
SIXTY's achievement is continuity. It preserves a direct line from the first 60 Thompson and the Pomeranc era of Thompson Hotels into a small independent collection that still believes a boutique hotel should feel residential, culturally literate and socially connected.
The Hospitality Lesson
The SIXTY lesson is that boutique luxury does not need a vast network to remain relevant, but heritage alone is insufficient. A small brand survives by continuously renewing rooms, restaurants, social spaces and local relationships while protecting the intimacy that made it distinctive.
Editorial Note
LHL records four current SIXTY-branded hotels as of 21 August 2026 based on the live official destination and property pages: SIXTY SoHo, SIXTY LES, SIXTY Beverly Hills and SIXTY DC. Older hotels such as 6 Columbus are retained as historical portfolio rather than counted as current. SIXTY DC opened in October 2025 and is the newest live property.
