1 · Opening
Auguste Fauchon opened on the Place de la Madeleine in 1886 selling the best of French produce to Parisians who could pay for it. In 2018 the same name opened a hotel on the same square.
2 · Why it matters
This is the reverse of almost every relationship recorded in Part X. Elsewhere, culinary maisons enter hotels as tenants, concessions or partners. Fauchon built the hotel — LHL-005 Fauchon L'Hôtel in the main register — and made the épicerie the concept of the rooms rather than an amenity within them.
The Library therefore records the house twice, and the pair is the cleanest demonstration of the Part's central proposition: satellites and houses are the same trade, and the traffic runs in both directions.
The maison itself also carried French luxury groceries into Japan long before French luxury retail generally went east ⚑ — the black-and-pink boxes were a Tokyo status object in the 1970s and 80s.
3 · Signature & ritual
The Madeleine windows, the éclair as canvas, the black-and-pink packaging, and now a hotel breakfast built from the shop.
4 · What this house does not solve
The maison has passed through financial difficulty and restructuring ⚑, which is what happens to a grocer competing with both supermarkets above and pâtissiers below.
A brand that means groceries, pastry, tea and now hotels is asking a great deal of one name.
And the hotel binds the house to a business with a different risk profile entirely: an épicerie can close for a season, a hotel cannot.
