Contribution to hospitalityThe estate restaurant abroad — a Tuscan property selling its produce in the Gulf

1 · Opening

Il Borro is a Ferragamo-owned estate in Tuscany with vineyards, a hotel and a restaurant. The Tuscan Bistro is what it opened abroad: the same produce, the same wine, several thousand kilometres from the farm.

2 · Why it matters

The house completes a family pattern the Library records nowhere else. Three Ferragamo branches appear in the register: Lungarno in Florence (LHL-095 Lungarno Collection), Castiglion del Bosco (LHL-H-454 Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco) and Il Borro (LHL-H-287 Cheval Blanc St-Tropez) — city hotels, a wine resort, and an estate that now exports its table.

The Tuscan Bistro also demonstrates the cleanest version of the estate-satellite model: the restaurant abroad is an advertisement for the property at home, and the wine list is the business case.

3 · Signature & ritual

Estate wine and oil; Tuscan cooking; a menu that functions as a catalogue of the property it comes from.

4 · What this house does not solve

An estate restaurant abroad separates the food from the landscape that justifies its price — the guest in Dubai is buying an idea of Tuscany.

It competes with local Italian restaurants that have no farm and lower costs.

And the model depends on the estate remaining excellent: a satellite is only as good as the property it advertises.

“Three Branches, One Family” — City hotels in Florence, a wine resort in Montalcino, an estate in the Valdarno that now sells its own table in Dubai: one family occupies three different models in this Library.
