Nordic Hotels & Resorts is the independent-hotel arm of Strawberry Hospitality Group and describes itself as the largest collection of independent hotels in the Nordics. Every hotel is intended to remain a stand-alone destination with its own story while gaining systems, loyalty, distribution and scale from a much larger Nordic hospitality group.
Why Nordic Hotels & Resorts Matters
The platform demonstrates how independent luxury and lifestyle hotels can scale without being forced into one consumer brand. THE THIEF, At Six, Hotel Kämp, Icehotel, Yasuragi and Farris Bad have radically different identities; the collection's job is to strengthen rather than replace them.
Petter A. Stordalen
The wider hospitality story is inseparable from Petter A. Stordalen. He entered the hotel industry in 1996 through the Scandinavian Choice Hotels business and subsequently built one of the Nordic region's largest hospitality groups.
1999 - Independent-Hotel Roots
Historical interviews with Stordalen identify Stenungsbaden Yacht Club in 1999 as an early independent concept and a precursor to the portfolio logic that became Nordic Hotels & Resorts.
From Nordic Choice to Strawberry
In 2023 the mother group changed its name from Nordic Choice Hotels to Strawberry, signalling a broader ecosystem of owned brands, independent hotels and external partners.
Business as Usual, New Mother Brand
Nordic Hotels & Resorts' official About page says the collection continued operating as independent hotels after the Strawberry transformation while retaining access to group scale and loyalty.
The Reason to Travel
The current master line calls Nordic Hotels & Resorts 'The reason to travel.' The proposition is that the hotel itself should be sufficiently distinctive to motivate the journey.
Hotels as Destinations
Strawberry's independent-hotel platform similarly describes these properties as destinations in themselves, whether in city centres, mountains, spas or coastal landscapes.
A Collection, Not a Chain
There is no universal Nordic Hotels & Resorts room, lobby or service script. Individual hotel names remain more important to the consumer than the collection name.
Stand-Alone Brands
The official master site says each brand is a fully stand-alone destination with the tools and perks of belonging to a much bigger family.
Current Geography
The current Strawberry directory places Nordic Hotels & Resorts properties across Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
Current Scale
The official consumer platform markets more than 50 independent hotels. The August 2026 country directory contains 19 Swedish, 21 Norwegian, 9 Finnish, 3 Danish and 2 Faroese entries.
Why Counting Is Difficult
Destination pages can contain regional duplicates and the collection changes quickly. LHL therefore records the official '50+' scale rather than turning a live directory count into a permanent master number.
Portfolio Architecture
Nordic Hotels & Resorts formally divides its world into Luxury, Lifestyle, Resorts, Restaurants & Bars, Villas and Residences, with upcoming projects as a separate development layer.
Luxury
The luxury portfolio is framed around captivating beauty, design landmarks and new or rediscovered classics.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle hotels are built around diversity, community, neighbourhood energy, restaurants and social public spaces.
Resorts
The resort category ranges from spa and coast to mountains, skiing and nature-led retreats.
Restaurants & Bars
Food and beverage concepts are treated as destination assets rather than secondary hotel amenities.
Villas and Residences
Villas add scarce private-stay products while residences extend hospitality into longer and more residential forms of stay.
Sweden
Sweden contains the broadest mix: Stockholm design hotels, spa resorts, Icehotel, mountain properties, yacht-club concepts and emerging regional destinations.
At Six
At Six is one of the collection's clearest urban-luxury statements, combining contemporary art, design and central Stockholm hospitality.
Hobo Stockholm
Hobo represents the more rebellious lifestyle side: neighbourhood energy, social spaces and a less formal urban proposition.
Hotel C and Nordic Light
Hotel C Stockholm and Nordic Light Hotel provide two different central-city concepts, one linked strongly with the ice-bar phenomenon and the other with Scandinavian design.
Yasuragi
Yasuragi is a highly distinctive Japanese-inspired spa retreat in the Stockholm archipelago.
Icehotel
Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi turns Torne River ice, art and Arctic seasonality into the reason to travel.
Copperhill Mountain Lodge
Copperhill in Åre is a major alpine design hotel and illustrates the collection's ability to operate at resort scale without losing architectural identity.
Selma Spa
Selma Spa represents Nordic wellness through a dedicated spa-resort format rather than a city-hotel treatment layer.
Norway
Norway combines urban luxury, historic hotels, fjord and coastal properties, ski resorts and major destination spas.
The Thief
THE THIEF in Oslo is one of the portfolio's defining luxury hotels, strongly associated with contemporary art, Tjuvholmen and an individual urban identity.
Sommerro
Sommerro transformed Oslo's former electricity-company headquarters into a cultural and social hospitality destination with restaurants, wellness, rooftop and heritage architecture.
Amerikalinjen
Amerikalinjen occupies the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line and uses migration, travel and maritime history as its central narrative.
Hobo Oslo
Hobo's arrival in Oslo demonstrates that selected concepts can become repeatable sub-brands within a collection otherwise built around one-off hotels.
Hotel Brosundet
Hotel Brosundet in Ålesund translates maritime heritage and waterfront architecture into an intimate design-hotel experience.
Dalen Hotel
Dalen is a historic grand wooden hotel and shows the collection's ability to preserve older Nordic hospitality icons alongside contemporary concepts.
Farris Bad
Farris Bad in Larvik is one of the strongest spa destinations, built over a natural mineral spring and positioned around water and wellness.
Mountain Resorts
Norefjell Ski & Spa and Skarsnuten Mountain Resort & Spa add ski-in and mountain-wellness products to the network.
Finland
The Finnish portfolio is unusually concentrated in Helsinki and includes several of the city's best-known independent luxury and design hotels.
Hotel Kämp
Hotel Kämp is the grand-hotel apex of the Finnish portfolio, bringing nineteenth-century Helsinki heritage into the independent collection.
Hotel St. George
St. George represents contemporary luxury through art, design and wellness in central Helsinki.
Hotel Haven
Hotel Haven offers a more intimate harbour-side luxury expression.
Helsinki Boutique Depth
Hotel F6, Lilla Roberts, Fabian and Klaus K give the Finnish portfolio considerable boutique depth.
Hobo Helsinki
Hobo Helsinki extends the Hobo lifestyle concept into Finland, illustrating selective movement from one-off hotels toward portable concepts.
Denmark
The Danish portfolio combines Copenhagen heritage and contemporary destination hotels with an Odense city property.
Villa Copenhagen
Villa Copenhagen transformed the former Central Post and Telegraph Head Office into a major luxury-lifestyle hotel and one of the collection's most visible development projects.
Admiral Hotel
Copenhagen Admiral Hotel uses a historic waterfront warehouse and maritime context to create a very different form of central-city hospitality.
Hotel Odeon
Hotel Odeon extends the portfolio beyond Copenhagen into Odense and provides a contemporary cultural-city base.
Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are a meaningful new frontier, with Hotel Føroyar in Tórshavn and the new KG Hotel in Klaksvík.
KG Hotel - July 2026
Nordic Hotels & Resorts announced KG Hotel's opening in Klaksvík on 1 July 2026, adding a new North Atlantic destination hotel to the live portfolio.
Why the Faroes Matter
The Faroe Islands align perfectly with the 'reason to travel' thesis: landscape and remoteness create destination value before conventional hotel amenities are considered.
Development Platform
Nordic Hotels & Resorts is also a hotel-development platform working with architects, designers, constructors and concept creators.
Old Classics and New Landmarks
The official development language covers both restoration of historic icons and creation of new landmarks.
Jørgensens Hotel
Jørgensens Hotel in Horsens is announced to join the portfolio in late summer 2026, reviving a Danish icon dating to 1744 in the historic Lichtenberg Palace.
Villa Nord
Villa Nord in Trondheim is scheduled for September 2026 and is described as an exclusive boutique concept combining heritage and modern comfort.
Hobo Copenhagen
Hobo Copenhagen will extend the lifestyle concept to another Nordic capital.
Munksjöstaden Hotel
The Jönköping project is planned for 2028 as a contemporary design-led cultural hotspot beside Lake Munksjön.
Falsterbo Strandbad
Falsterbo Strandbad is a future Swedish seaside hotel, spa and restaurant project built around a century-old wellness destination.
Pipeline Discipline
Because the collection has an active pipeline, LHL separates open hotels from announced projects and dates the portfolio explicitly.
Strawberry Ecosystem
The greatest structural advantage is access to Strawberry's economies of scale, distribution, technology, culture and loyalty while retaining independent hotel identities.
Loyalty
Nordic Hotels & Resorts participates in Strawberry's loyalty ecosystem. Its About page describes access to the largest and most ambitious hotel loyalty programme in the Nordics.
Loyalty Without Rebranding
A guest can receive group loyalty benefits without THE THIEF or Icehotel needing to become Strawberry-branded hotels.
Distribution
The independent hotels appear inside Strawberry's booking architecture while many also maintain their own websites and external affiliations.
External Affiliations
Some properties participate in networks such as Design Hotels, Preferred Hotels or other third-party systems. These coexist with the Nordic Hotels & Resorts / Strawberry relationship.
Best-Price Exception
Strawberry's current best-price guarantee explicitly excludes Nordic Hotels & Resorts independent hotels, illustrating how independence produces different commercial rules.
Design Philosophy
There is no single design language beyond distinctiveness. The collection can include Japanese minimalism, Arctic ice architecture, Nordic modernism, Belle Époque heritage and large contemporary urban projects.
Architecture as Brand Creation
The development team uses architecture and interior design to create individual brands rather than apply a master-brand visual standard.
Local Story
The strongest hotels begin with a local story - shipping at Amerikalinjen, electricity at Sommerro, Arctic ice at Icehotel, Japanese bathing at Yasuragi or postal history at Villa Copenhagen.
Food and Beverage
Restaurants and bars are treated as stand-alone concepts, often designed to attract local residents as strongly as hotel guests.
Wellness
Wellness is especially strong across the resort side: Yasuragi, Farris Bad, Selma Spa, Son Spa, Norefjell, Strömstad and others give the platform significant spa depth.
Nordic Nature
Mountains, fjords, archipelagos, Arctic environments and North Atlantic islands provide the natural counterpart to the urban portfolio.
Service Philosophy
The collection does not impose one visible service choreography. The common expectation is strong hospitality delivered in a way consistent with each individual brand.
Entrepreneurial Culture
The official culture language emphasises individuality, entrepreneurship and inclusivity, mirroring the independence expected of the hotels.
Comparison with Design Hotels
Design Hotels is a global affiliation and distribution network for independently designed hotels. Nordic Hotels & Resorts is more operationally embedded within one Nordic hospitality group and adds Strawberry loyalty and development capability.
Comparison with Preferred Hotels & Resorts
Preferred is a global independent-hotel membership and distribution platform. Nordic Hotels & Resorts is geographically narrower but more deeply involved in concept creation, operations and development.
Comparison with Small Luxury Hotels of the World
SLH focuses on smaller luxury independents globally. Nordic Hotels & Resorts covers a much wider range of scale and positioning, from luxury icons to lifestyle hotels and large spa resorts.
Comparison with Fontenille Collection
Fontenille is founder-owned, Western European and tied strongly to land, agriculture and historic estates. Nordic Hotels & Resorts is a larger Nordic platform whose coherence comes from independence and destination strength.
Comparison with Esprit de France
Esprit de France is focused on French heritage and art. Nordic Hotels & Resorts is broader in product type and uses the Nordic region itself - cities, mountains, spas, ice and coast - as connective geography.
The Advantage of Independence at Scale
The platform offers an unusually attractive combination: independent identity at property level and chain-like scale behind the scenes.
The Risk of Independence at Scale
The more hotels join, the harder it becomes for the Nordic Hotels & Resorts name itself to communicate a consistent quality level.
The Risk of Portfolio Breadth
Luxury, lifestyle, resorts, conference hotels and unusual destination properties can make the master collection difficult to classify for consumers.
The Risk of Brand Architecture
Strawberry, Nordic Hotels & Resorts, individual hotel names, external affiliations and portable sub-brands such as Hobo create overlapping identities.
The Risk of Loyalty Complexity
Group loyalty is powerful, but property-specific commercial rules and external affiliations mean benefits and booking conditions can vary.
The Risk of Development Speed
A strong pipeline creates momentum but increases the challenge of protecting the individuality that makes the platform valuable.
The Risk of Nordic Concentration
The collection benefits from deep regional expertise but remains exposed to Nordic travel demand, labour costs, seasonality and regional economic conditions.
What the Model Does Not Solve
Independence does not automatically create originality, and scale does not automatically create consistency. A 50-plus-hotel collection can become an administrative umbrella if individual concepts are weak; external affiliations and Strawberry systems can also complicate the guest's understanding of who owns, operates or rewards the stay. The model works when the parent platform remains largely invisible and the hotel itself remains memorable.
What Distinguishes Nordic Hotels & Resorts
THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF INDEPENDENT HOTELS IN THE NORDICS, EMPOWERED BY STRAWBERRY HOSPITALITY GROUP. MORE THAN 50 HOTELS ACROSS SWEDEN, NORWAY, FINLAND, DENMARK AND THE FAROE ISLANDS. LUXURY, LIFESTYLE, RESORTS, RESTAURANTS & BARS, VILLAS AND RESIDENCES UNDER ONE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATING PLATFORM. THE THIEF, SOMMERRO, AMERIKALINJEN, AT SIX, VILLA COPENHAGEN, HOTEL KAMP, ICEHOTEL, YASURAGI AND FARRIS BAD AS SIGNATURE EXAMPLES. INDEPENDENT BRAND IDENTITY COMBINED WITH STRAWBERRY LOYALTY, DISTRIBUTION AND SCALE.
The Strategic Achievement
Nordic Hotels & Resorts' achievement is to industrialise independence without eliminating it. The platform can create and support hotels with radically different stories while sharing group infrastructure behind the scenes.
The Hospitality Lesson
The Nordic Hotels & Resorts lesson is that the strongest master brand may sometimes be the one guests notice least. If the individual hotel is genuinely worth travelling for, the collection creates value by supplying capital, systems, loyalty and expertise without flattening the story.
Editorial Note
LHL records Nordic Hotels & Resorts as an independent-hotel platform within Strawberry rather than a conventional hotel brand. The current official consumer platform markets 50+ hotels across five Nordic markets. KG Hotel opened 1 July 2026; Jørgensens Hotel and Villa Nord remain pipeline as of 22 August 2026.
