The Cosmopolitan brought the language of the urban design hotel into the scale of a Las Vegas casino resort.
Position
The Cosmopolitan brought the language of the urban design hotel into the scale of a Las Vegas casino resort. Its editorial significance lies in the combination of outdoor residential space, theatrical public interiors and restaurants that function as destinations in their own right. This is the Library’s interpretation of its architecture and operating offer. The House and Its Register
The register places this single resort in Part I, Volume 10, Gaming Resorts, as LHL-183, P1-10-10. The entry concerns The Cosmopolitan itself; the wider MGM Resorts International portfolio has its own record, LHL-184.
Opening
The resort opened on 15 December 2010. Its January 2025 fact sheet lists 3,033 guestrooms, including 1,412 suites; this is a later inventory. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf)
The Blackstone Period
Blackstone acquired the property in 2014. MGM’s subsequent acquisition release records substantial capital improvements during that ownership and identifies December 2018 as the room-renovation milestone. Those dates describe a completed investment cycle rather than a new resort opening. [Source 2](https://investors.mgmresorts.com/2022-05-17-MGM-RESORTS-INTERNATIONAL-ANNOUNCES-COMPLETION-OF-ACQUISITION-OF-THE-OPERATIONS-OF-THE-COSMOPOLITAN-OF-LAS-VEGAS)
MGM Takes Over Operations
On 17 May 2022, MGM Resorts International completed its purchase of the operations for $1.625 billion. The distinction between acquiring operations and acquiring the building is essential to an accurate account of the resort’s corporate history. [Source 2](https://investors.mgmresorts.com/2022-05-17-MGM-RESORTS-INTERNATIONAL-ANNOUNCES-COMPLETION-OF-ACQUISITION-OF-THE-OPERATIONS-OF-THE-COSMOPOLITAN-OF-LAS-VEGAS)
The Real-Estate Structure
The 2022 transaction placed the real estate with a partnership of Stonepeak, Cherng Family Trust and Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. MGM entered an initial 30-year lease, with three ten-year renewal options. These are the transaction’s documented terms, not a claim that MGM bought the freehold. [Source 2](https://investors.mgmresorts.com/2022-05-17-MGM-RESORTS-INTERNATIONAL-ANNOUNCES-COMPLETION-OF-ACQUISITION-OF-THE-OPERATIONS-OF-THE-COSMOPOLITAN-OF-LAS-VEGAS)
A Street-Oriented Resort
Arquitectonica describes a building that occupies its site in an urban manner and engages the pavement through transparent shopfronts. This approach gives the resort a relationship with the boulevard at pedestrian level, alongside its presence on the skyline. [Source 3](https://arquitectonica.com/architecture/project/cosmopolitan/)
The Vertical Plan
Two towers rise above a multi-level podium. In the architect’s account, restaurants, retail and gaming are stacked into a dense mixed-use composition. The resulting editorial distinction is vertical concentration: several kinds of hospitality occupy the same piece of city. [Source 3](https://arquitectonica.com/architecture/project/cosmopolitan/)
Modernity as the Theme
Arquitectonica used abstract glass forms, folds and angular surfaces rather than a reconstruction of a historical city. The building’s identity comes from composition and transparency. Its architectural narrative therefore differs from the destination replicas associated with another phase of Strip development. [Source 3](https://arquitectonica.com/architecture/project/cosmopolitan/)
Architectural Responsibility
The resort credits Arquitectonica as building architect and Friedmutter Group as executive architects. Interior authorship was distributed across multiple practices. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf)
Rockwell’s Original Scope
Rockwell Group’s 2011 account covered the East and West lobbies, The Chandelier, Marquee, Jaleo and guestroom interiors. The commission joined arrival, dining, nightlife and accommodation through an experiential design approach. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group)
The Digital Lobby
The original West Lobby installation used eight columns carrying mirrors and LCD displays. Rockwell’s LAB documented 384 column displays and another 26 behind reception. These numbers describe the original installation; they are not a verified inventory of today’s hardware. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group)
The Chandelier
The Chandelier was conceived as a three-storey bar and lounge inside a curtain of crystals and strings. The installation made a decorative object habitable: guests occupied the spectacle rather than simply observing it across a lobby. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group)
Vesper and the Arrival Sequence
Rockwell described the original Vesper interior through metallic mesh, reflective surfaces and pale tones. Placed beside the lobby, it extended the arrival sequence into a social space. This is a historical design reading, not a claim that every original finish survives. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group)
Accommodation Categories
The current catalogue differentiates City rooms and studios from Terrace accommodation. That distinction matters more than the generic promise of a spacious room: a guest seeking outdoor space needs the appropriate category explicitly confirmed. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
City Room Queen
The City Room Queen is listed at 460 square feet with two queen beds. It provides a clearly defined entry into the accommodation range without implying that every room includes the terraces for which the property is known. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
The Terrace Proposition
Terrace studios give the skyline an outdoor viewing position. Fountain View appears as a separately named category. A general terrace reservation and a confirmed fountain-facing reservation should therefore remain separate descriptions. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
Bedroom Separation
The Terrace One Bedroom Suite offers a separate bedroom and Japanese soaking tub. Its value is spatial organisation, not simply a larger headline area: sleeping and living can be considered independently. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
Wraparound Accommodation
The Wraparound Terrace Suite makes outdoor orientation a defining feature. Published headline areas across room categories should be checked against detailed floor plans before comparing interior space alone. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
Restore Lanai Suites
The current offer includes two-storey Restore Lanai Suites with private patios and plunge pools. The operator says nine of eleven have direct Chelsea Pool access, subject to opening hours and availability. The connection is consequently category- and allocation-dependent. [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html)
The Boulevard Penthouses
The January 2025 fact sheet lists 25 Boulevard Penthouses, with designs by Tihany Design, Daun Curry and Richmond International as consultants to Marnell Companies. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf)
A Collection of Interiors
Multiple penthouse authors illustrate a broader editorial point: a large resort can contain distinct design commissions. A signature interior in one category should never be used as evidence for the appearance of every room.
Restaurants as a Reason to Visit
The Restaurant Collection combines food-hall service, restaurant dining, bars and private events. Editorially, this breadth allows the resort to function as a dining address for visitors who may never stay in its rooms. [Source 6](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants.html)
José Andrés and the House
Marriott’s property profile identifies José Andrés with Jaleo and China Poblano. Spanish dining and a Chinese-Mexican concept give his authorship more than one expression within the same resort. [Source 12](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lasco-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-autograph-collection/overview/)
é by José Andrés
A private room beside Jaleo houses é, where the operator describes a nine-seat steel-topped counter and an avant-garde Spanish tasting menu. The red interior and close encounter with the kitchen turn a very small room into a destination within the larger property. [Source 7](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants/e-by-jose-andres.html)
The Scale of Intimacy
At é, the small counter creates a different relationship between diner and performance from the surrounding resort. Its significance is the coexistence of a deliberately limited dining format with mass hospitality. A reservation at Jaleo does not describe a reservation at é. [Source 7](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants/e-by-jose-andres.html)
Momofuku and Milk Bar
The current Marriott profile associates Momofuku with David Chang and Michael Chen, and Milk Bar with Christina Tosi. Their presence places restaurant and dessert authorship alongside the resort’s architectural signatures. [Source 12](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lasco-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-autograph-collection/overview/)
Beauty & Essex
Beauty & Essex is presented as a collaboration between TAO Group and Chris Santos, using a pawn-shop entrance and sharing plates. Arrival becomes part of the restaurant’s identity before the meal begins. [Source 12](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lasco-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-autograph-collection/overview/)
Block 16
Block 16 gives the restaurant programme a food-hall format. Its counter-service setting broadens the ways a guest can eat within the property, supplementing rather than reproducing a formal restaurant occasion. [Source 6](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants.html)
A Changing Dining Roster
The current dining page includes Amaya Modern Mexican and Naughty Patty’s alongside established venues. A historical restaurant list therefore needs a date. This master records selected operating concepts without treating the opening roster as permanent. [Source 6](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants.html)
Room Service
The operator advertises room service around the clock. That extends the dining offer into the accommodation, particularly for guests whose schedules follow late performances or nightlife. Specific dishes and delivery conditions remain matters for the current menu. [Source 6](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants.html)
The Chelsea
The Chelsea is described as a 40,000-square-foot concert and event venue. Brick surfaces, a vintage-style lobby bar, gallery boxes and a grand stair give it an interior identity of its own, beyond the function of accommodating an audience. [Source 10](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/entertainment.html)
Programming
The live entertainment calendar includes music, comedy and sporting events. It is a changing programme rather than a single resident production. Future listings establish what is scheduled, not what has already taken place. [Source 10](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/entertainment.html)
Marquee
Marquee connects nightclub and dayclub activity with the resort. Its place in Rockwell’s original scope also makes nightlife part of the property’s design history, rather than an incidental use added to a conventional hotel. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group) [Source 10](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/entertainment.html)
Superfrico and Performance
The current entertainment page presents THE PARTY at Superfrico through food, DJs and appearances by Spiegelworld performers. This is a contemporary example of the resort’s overlapping restaurant and entertainment formats. [Source 10](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/entertainment.html)
The Pool District
The operator distinguishes Boulevard Pool, Chelsea Pool and Marquee Dayclub. These are different settings within one resort; describing them as a single pool obscures the choice between social swimming, landscaped surroundings and a programmed club environment. [Source 9](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/pool-district.html)
Boulevard and Chelsea
Boulevard Pool is presented as a place for eating, drinking and socialising; Chelsea Pool uses desert landscape references. These are the operator’s positioning statements, useful for identifying intended atmosphere rather than guaranteeing a particular noise level. [Source 9](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/pool-district.html)
Dayclub Access
Marquee Dayclub is explicitly restricted to guests aged 21 and over. Its DJ-led programme requires separate attention to admission and reservations. A hotel booking should not be described as unrestricted access to every pool-related experience. [Source 9](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/pool-district.html)
Cabanas and Daybeds
The Pool District uses food-and-beverage minimums for cabana and daybed reservations. The published model differs from a simple rental charge. A confirmed quotation should specify the minimum, applicable additions and the reservation’s conditions. [Source 9](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/pool-district.html)
Sahra
Sahra Spa, Salon & Hammam draws its stated design inspiration from the desert. Massage, body treatments and salon services provide a quieter programme within the entertainment resort. The spa’s language of wellbeing does not establish clinical efficacy. [Source 8](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/sahra-spa-salon-hammam.html)
The Hammam
The operator describes a heated motherstone, soaking tubs, steam rooms and stone loungers. The hammam is a distinct treatment setting with its own services; it should not be reduced to a generic steam-room amenity. [Source 8](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/sahra-spa-salon-hammam.html)
Private Spa and Fitness
Sahra also advertises a spa penthouse suite, while the property lists two fitness centres. These extend the range from private treatment to exercise. Individual facilities, appointments and access conditions require confirmation for the intended stay. [Source 8](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/amenities/sahra-spa-salon-hammam.html)
Art Beyond Decoration
The fact sheet names Marilyn Minter and Maya Hayuk within a collection spanning paintings, photography, sculpture and murals. Individual works’ current installation status remains unverified. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf)
Meetings
Meeting-space figures differ: 190,000 square feet in the January 2025 fact sheet, against 243,000 in MGM’s 2022 release. Neither reconciles the scopes. Event planners need current specifications. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf) [Source 2](https://investors.mgmresorts.com/2022-05-17-MGM-RESORTS-INTERNATIONAL-ANNOUNCES-COMPLETION-OF-ACQUISITION-OF-THE-OPERATIONS-OF-THE-COSMOPOLITAN-OF-LAS-VEGAS)
MGM Rewards
MGM Rewards replaced Identity, with points and balances transferred on 30 July 2024. The official transition page confirms the completed change. Its historical conversion provisions should not be presented as a continuing offer for new guests. [Source 11](https://www.mgmresorts.com/en/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas.html)
Autograph Collection
Marriott continues to list the property as The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Autograph Collection. This affiliation coexists with MGM’s operating role. The two names describe different relationships and should not be collapsed into a single ownership claim. [Source 12](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lasco-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-autograph-collection/overview/) [Source 2](https://investors.mgmresorts.com/2022-05-17-MGM-RESORTS-INTERNATIONAL-ANNOUNCES-COMPLETION-OF-ACQUISITION-OF-THE-OPERATIONS-OF-THE-COSMOPOLITAN-OF-LAS-VEGAS)
Booking Through LVXVRY
A LVXVRY booking brief should identify the exact accommodation and view, eligible rate, cancellation conditions and any confirmed privileges. Programme recognition, breakfast, credits and upgrades should be documented for the selected booking. This entry does not establish a property-specific preferred-partner agreement.
People and Authorship Links
David Rockwell, LHL-P-249, and Adam Tihany, LHL-P-147, are verified register cross-links. Daun Curry, José Andrés, David Chang, Christina Tosi and Chris Santos merit consideration through their distinct design or culinary authorship. Their individual records should rest on that work, with house-specific roles verified; no unconfirmed registry codes are assigned here. [Source 1](https://filecache.mediaroom.com/mr5mr_mgmresorts/180017/download/TCOLV%20Fact%20Sheet%201-24-25.pdf) [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group) [Source 12](https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lasco-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-autograph-collection/overview/)
The Hospitality Model
The Cosmopolitan’s contribution is the concentration of several scales of experience: the terrace room, the intimate dining counter, the inhabited artwork and the entertainment venue. This is an editorial synthesis of the documented offer, not a claim that the resort invented each constituent idea. [Source 4](https://www.archdaily.com/119253/the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas-rockwell-group) [Source 5](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/hotel.html) [Source 7](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/restaurants/e-by-jose-andres.html) [Source 10](https://cosmopolitanlasvegas.mgmresorts.com/en/entertainment.html)
Candour
This master uses operator records, architects’ accounts and Marriott’s property listing, rather than an independent service inspection. Arquitectonica’s project page retains design-era figures that differ from the operating inventory. Space totals also vary between corporate and property documents. Historical design descriptions are dated; current menus, admissions, room allocations and benefits can change. The pre-opening financing history is outside this source set. No promotional wellbeing claim is treated as a medical finding.
