David Fattal founded his hotel-management company in Israel in 1998 after a career with international hotel operators. The first hotel acquired for the emerging network was the Meridien Eilat; by 2006 the group had created Leonardo Hotels as its principal international brand in Germany. In July 2026 Fattal Hotel Group described itself as the owner and operator of 329 hotels in 22 countries, while the live Leonardo consumer platform listed more than 315 hotels across more than 137 destinations. The result is one of the largest founder-led hotel platforms to have emerged from Israel.
The Brand
Fattal Hotel Group is the corporate and ownership platform; Leonardo is its principal international consumer architecture. In Israel, Fattal also operates a wider set of names including Herods and U Hotels, while the international Leonardo system has developed several layers: Leonardo Hotels, Leonardo Royal, Leonardo Boutique, NYX Hotels, Leonardo Limited Edition and newer formats such as Leonardo Smart and master. This is not a pure luxury collection. The portfolio ranges from practical urban hotels to resorts, upper-upscale Royal properties, lifestyle NYX hotels and a curated Limited Edition tier containing distinctive historic and luxury houses. LHL therefore classifies the master platform as Upper-Upscale while treating its higher-end sub-brands and individual houses on their own merits.
Philosophy
Fattal's model is unusually owner-operator driven for a group of this scale. The company expands through acquisition, ownership partnerships, leases and management, then uses common commercial infrastructure to reposition hotels under Leonardo and related brands. The founding advantage was speed: rather than depend only on new construction, Fattal repeatedly entered markets by acquiring existing portfolios and converting them. The current Leonardo proposition is broad rather than doctrinal: authentic hospitality, personal service and hotels adapted to different trip purposes. The group's more interesting strategic idea is portfolio segmentation. Leonardo Royal addresses the upper-upscale guest, Boutique smaller design-led hotels, NYX lifestyle and social energy, and Limited Edition distinctive individual houses that should retain more of their own history and character.
What Distinguishes it
Founder-led at scale David Fattal remains the defining founder while the group has grown beyond 300 hotels. That combination of personal founder identity and institutional European scale is relatively rare. Acquisition as growth engine Fattal has repeatedly used hotel and portfolio acquisitions to enter or deepen markets. Partnership structures in Europe allow the group to combine its own capital with institutional investment while retaining operating control. One platform, several brands Leonardo is not one homogeneous product. Royal, Boutique, NYX, Limited Edition, Smart and master allow the group to absorb very different assets without forcing every hotel into one physical template. Europe as the second home market The international story began in Germany in 2006 and Europe became central rather than peripheral. Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain and other markets now form a network comparable in strategic importance to Israel. Owner and operator Fattal is not merely a franchisor collecting brand fees. Its model includes substantial property investment and operating exposure, aligning the group more closely with asset performance than many global chain systems.
Who it is Not For
Fattal / Leonardo is not a single luxury promise. A traveller who expects every property to deliver the same five-star service level, architecture or facilities should select the individual hotel and sub-brand carefully. The strength of the platform is breadth and operational scale; the trade-off is variation. For the highest-end traveller, Leonardo Limited Edition, selected Royal hotels and individual landmark acquisitions are more relevant than the standard Leonardo Hotels flag.

Booking With LVXVRY
Fattal / Leonardo does not operate a confirmed LVXVRY preferred-partner programme comparable with Marriott STARS, Hyatt Privé or Hilton for Luxury. LVXVRY can reserve Leonardo and Fattal properties on request and quote the best suitable available or contracted rate for the requested dates; no preferred-partner amenity is claimed unless confirmed for the individual hotel and booking. Leonardo AdvantageCLUB is a separate guest loyalty programme. Its current terms state that eligible public-rate bookings can earn points when booked through qualifying direct channels; traditional GDS travel-agency bookings may qualify for Miles & More under the relevant programme rules, while travel-agent rates themselves are excluded from AdvantageCLUB points. LVXVRY therefore verifies loyalty eligibility against the exact rate and channel rather than promising credit automatically. LVXVRY — lvxvry.ca
