Opening
Velas Resorts is one of Mexico’s most important home-grown luxury hospitality groups and one of the companies that most decisively challenged the assumption that all-inclusive and serious luxury were incompatible. The family-owned group developed from Velas Vallarta in 1990 into a seven-property collection across Riviera Nayarit, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. Its defining achievement is raising cuisine, suites, spa, service and family programming to standards normally associated with conventional luxury hotels.
Eduardo José Vela Ruiz
Eduardo José Vela Ruiz, 1951–2023, is the central figure. A lawyer by training and active in real estate from the late 1970s, he combined construction and hospitality into Velas Resorts. The brand remains explicitly built around his legacy: service culture, generosity, architecture, gastronomy and the conviction that an inclusive resort could compete at the top of luxury hospitality.
1990 — Velas Vallarta
In 1989 changing economic circumstances led Eduardo Vela to transform a Puerto Vallarta condominium project into a resort. Velas Vallarta opened in 1990 and became the first property. The founding lesson, repeated in Velas’ history, was that hospitality ultimately depends on service. It remains the family-friendly Puerto Vallarta expression.
Mexican Family Ownership
Velas remains proudly Mexican-owned and operated by the Vela family. After Eduardo Vela’s death, leadership continued within the family, with Juan Vela Ruiz serving as CEO by the 35th anniversary. Velas is therefore not a foreign luxury flag using Mexico as geography but a Mexican group offering its own interpretation of national hospitality.
2002 — Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit
The decisive transformation came in 2002 with Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. The resort combined world-class cuisine, suite accommodation and high service standards with the simplicity of everything included. Velas credits it with pioneering the modern Luxury All-Inclusive concept and establishing the Grand Velas standard.
Grand Velas as the Upper Brand
Grand Velas is the clearest upper expression of the group. Riviera Nayarit, Riviera Maya and Los Cabos form the core of its international luxury reputation. Their proposition depends on large suites, ambitious architecture, multiple gourmet restaurants, substantial spas and high service density rather than conventional high-volume all-inclusive logic.
2005 — Casa Velas
Casa Velas became the first adults-only property in 2005. Located on Marina Vallarta Golf Course, the boutique hotel offers a quieter, more intimate model than Grand Velas and access to Táu Beach Club. It showed early that Velas could segment by mood and guest mission rather than repeat one resort prototype.
2008 — Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Grand Velas Riviera Maya opened in 2008 despite the global economic crisis. Its three environments — Zen Grand, Ambassador and Grand Class — divide jungle, family beachfront and more secluded luxury missions within one resort. This is one of the strongest examples of internal segmentation in luxury all-inclusive.
2016 — Grand Velas Los Cabos
Grand Velas Los Cabos opened in 2016 with dramatic oceanfront architecture, large suites, fine dining and SE Spa. It completed the original trilogy of premier Grand Velas destinations and by 2026 had become the strongest external validation of the Velas model.
A Global Benchmark in 2026
In 2026 Grand Velas Los Cabos held Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel status, AAA Five Diamonds and a MICHELIN-starred Cocina de Autor. Velas describes it as the only all-inclusive resort globally combining all three distinctions. This provides unusually strong evidence that Luxury All-Inclusive can be judged against leading non-inclusive luxury hotels.
2018 — Mar del Cabo
Mar del Cabo transformed a historic Los Cabos property into an adults-only, pet-friendly boutique hotel in 2018. It is the only European Plan property in the current portfolio. Its presence proves that Velas is not ideologically tied to all-inclusive when a smaller independent boutique concept calls for another model.
2024 — Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos
Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos opened in January 2024 with 79 suites and an adults-only Luxury All-Inclusive concept. It combines Grand Velas standards with smaller scale, intimacy and access to selected facilities at sister property Grand Velas Los Cabos. It is the most important recent evolution of the house.
The Seven-Property Portfolio
The current portfolio comprises Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Grand Velas Los Cabos, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, Casa Velas, Velas Vallarta and Mar del Cabo. Despite different formats, the architecture remains coherent: three large Grand Velas flagships, one boutique Grand Velas, one adults-only Puerto Vallarta boutique, one family legacy resort and one European Plan retreat.
Luxury All-Inclusive — The Core Innovation
Velas’ central contribution is redefining all-inclusive. It replaced the old equation of inclusion with buffet scale and standardized entertainment by emphasizing suites, gourmet dining, premium beverages, sophisticated spa and personalised service. Luxury lies not simply in including more items but in reducing transactional friction without reducing quality or choice.
Gastronomy as a Brand Pillar
Gastronomy is perhaps the strongest proof point in the Velas luxury argument. The group invests in specialist restaurants, chef talent, wine, culinary events and destination-specific concepts. By 2025–26, Cocina de Autor at both Grand Velas Los Cabos and Grand Velas Riviera Maya held MICHELIN Stars.
Cocina de Autor
Cocina de Autor represents the highest culinary expression of Velas. Tasting-menu formats and contemporary techniques replace conventional resort-dining logic. Dual MICHELIN recognition directly challenges the old criticism that all-inclusive inevitably produces mediocre food.
SE Spa
SE Spa is another defining upper-tier asset. Grand Velas spas have received Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star recognition and operate at a scale and design intensity that makes wellness a major part of the resort. Velas is not medical wellness; spa, hydrotherapy, rituals, fitness and special retreats deepen the luxury holiday.
Wellnessing Getaways
Annual Wellnessing Getaways turn wellness into programming. In 2026 Grand Velas resorts hosted multi-day experiences involving coaches, fitness, workshops, nutrition, meditation, ice baths, longevity content and special dinners, with core programming included in the nightly all-inclusive rate.
Family Hospitality
Velas is unusually strong in family luxury. Grand Velas Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit combine children’s and teens’ clubs, family activities, spacious suites and sophisticated adult dining and spa. High-end family travel is treated as a serious luxury mission rather than a compromise.
Adults-Only Luxury
Casa Velas and Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos create adults-only alternatives. Casa Velas is intimate and golf-oriented; Grand Velas Boutique applies Luxury All-Inclusive to a 79-suite Los Cabos format. This gives meaningful segmentation without unrelated sub-brands.
Architecture and Scale
Grand Velas resorts are physically substantial. Large suites, landscape integration, ocean views, dramatic public spaces and distinct zones are used to make scale feel luxurious rather than institutional. Riviera Maya’s three environments effectively create different hotels within one resort.
Mexican Hospitality
Velas frames service as an elevated expression of Mexican hospitality centered on warmth, generosity and genuine attention. This cultural framing matters because the brand competes with international luxury operators while remaining locally owned. Its strongest service is polished without becoming culturally anonymous.
Service Culture
Eduardo Vela’s anniversary message places service above suites, dining and architecture as the true differentiator. Physical luxury can be built; repeatable human service requires culture, training and leadership. For Velas, inclusion only works when service does not feel transactional or industrial.
Experiences Beyond the Basics
Velas develops culinary events, milestone birthday experiences, wellness retreats, seasonal family activities, art, culture and destination programming. Resorts therefore become content platforms rather than static combinations of room, beach and restaurants — particularly valuable for repeat guests.
Awards as External Validation
Velas has accumulated AAA, Forbes, MICHELIN and traveller-review recognition. In 2026 the three Grand Velas flagships ranked among leading global all-inclusive resorts in Tripadvisor results, while Grand Velas Los Cabos added Forbes Five-Star hotel status. Awards do not replace editorial judgment but provide broad third-party validation.
Loyalty and Repeat Recognition
Velas does not currently foreground a formal collection-wide proprietary points/status programme. Direct promotions, repeat-guest relationships, property history and personalised service play a greater retention role than an earn-and-burn currency. LHL classification: None.
Luxury Positioning
The Grand Velas core sits firmly in high luxury. Los Cabos is externally validated at Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond and MICHELIN level; Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit are established luxury all-inclusive flagships; Grand Velas Boutique pushes toward smaller adults-only luxury. Casa Velas, Velas Vallarta and Mar del Cabo occupy different boutique, family and European Plan positions. LHL classification: Mexican Family-Owned Luxury All-Inclusive Pioneer.
What Distinguishes Velas Resorts
MEXICAN FAMILY OWNERSHIP. The Vela family remains central.
LUXURY ALL-INCLUSIVE PIONEER. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit helped redefine the category from 2002.
GASTRONOMY. Dual MICHELIN-starred Cocina de Autor restaurants provide rare culinary validation.
SE SPA. Forbes-recognized wellness infrastructure anchors the upper resorts.
FAMILY LUXURY. Children’s and teens’ programming coexists with serious adult luxury.
ADULTS-ONLY SEGMENTATION. Casa Velas and Grand Velas Boutique broaden the house.
MEXICO SPECIALISM. The portfolio is concentrated in major Mexican leisure destinations.
SERVICE CULTURE. Human hospitality is positioned above physical product.
What the Model Does Not Solve
The main strategic risk is geographic concentration: Velas remains entirely Mexico-focused. The second challenge is category perception. Despite exceptional validation, some luxury travellers still associate all-inclusive with a lower market tier. Velas must continually prove that inclusion is a payment architecture, not a quality ceiling.

Booking with LVXVRY
Velas should be booked at property, ambiance and suite level. At Riviera Maya, Zen Grand, Ambassador and Grand Class produce materially different stays. At Los Cabos, suite category, ocean orientation, dining and spa planning matter. At Riviera Nayarit, family composition and suite configuration are central. Grand Velas Boutique and Casa Velas suit adults-only travel; Mar del Cabo must be understood as European Plan. Advisor benefits should be assessed separately from inclusions already embedded in the rate.
Editorial Note
This entry reflects official Velas Resorts information reviewed in August 2026. The company celebrated 35 years in 2025, tracing its hospitality origin to Velas Vallarta in 1990; one official anniversary newsroom text references 1991 as the formal founding year, while the dedicated 35-year timeline identifies the resort beginning in 1990. LHL therefore uses 1990 as hospitality origin and notes the minor date inconsistency. The current portfolio contains seven properties, all in Mexico. Eduardo José Vela Ruiz remains the founding figure; Juan Vela Ruiz is current CEO. No formal collection-wide proprietary points/status programme is confirmed.
