Vignette Collection

IHG launched Vignette Collection in August 2021 as its first collection brand, designed for independent luxury and lifestyle hotels that wanted access to IHG's distribution and loyalty system without surrendering their own names, identities or stories. Hotel X Brisbane Fortitude Valley became the first operating member on 7 December 2021. By 31 March 2026 IHG Development reported 34 open hotels with 8,708 rooms and another 45 hotels / 6,319 rooms in the pipeline.

The Brand

Vignette Collection sits in IHG's Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio and functions as a luxury conversion / collection brand. Owners retain a property's distinctive attributes while gaining IHG systems, global distribution and IHG One Rewards. This makes Vignette strategically important for conversions: an existing independent hotel can enter a major chain without being physically redesigned into a standard InterContinental or Kimpton. The collection now spans urban and resort locations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and island destinations. The master brand is deliberately quieter than the individual hotel. What repeats is not architecture but three behavioural codes: one-of-a-kind stays, a property-specific Memorable Ritual and a local 'A Means for Good' initiative.

Philosophy

Vignette Collection targets what IHG calls the next generation of luxury travellers: guests seeking discovery and purpose as well as design and service. The collection therefore links individuality with responsibility rather than treating sustainability as a separate corporate chapter. The brand's strongest idea is controlled difference. Hotels are expected to retain their own character, service style and design, while a small number of recurring codes make the collection legible. This is a classic soft-brand problem solved with rituals rather than a physical prototype.

What Distinguishes it

Memorable Rituals Every property creates its own complimentary ritual intended to connect guest, hotel and destination. Examples range from tea ceremonies and local tastings to music, yoga or small daily acts tied to the property's story. The ritual is the collection's most visible portable signature. A Means for Good Each hotel is expected to support a local social or environmental initiative, while the collection also works with the World Literacy Foundation. This gives responsibility a property-level expression rather than leaving it only at IHG corporate level. Independent names survive Hotel X, Casa da Companhia, Sindhorn Midtown and other members retain their names. Vignette works as an endorsement, not as the principal consumer identity. Luxury conversion engine IHG explicitly positions Vignette as an independent conversion brand. Owners can gain IHG scale relatively quickly while protecting the value embedded in an existing hotel concept. No common aesthetic A converted Dominican convent, a Bangkok lifestyle hotel, a Maldivian island resort and a contemporary urban tower can all belong. Design quality matters; design sameness does not.

Who it is Not For

Vignette Collection is not for travellers who want a predictable hard-brand room, one recurring service ritual or identical facilities from hotel to hotel. Individual properties can differ materially in scale, architecture and atmosphere. The collection is best for guests who choose the house first and value IHG affiliation, loyalty and a light layer of common brand codes behind it.

Signature Houses

Hotel X Brisbane Fortitude Valley · Brisbane

The first Vignette Collection hotel. Its nightlife, art, rooftop and Fortitude Valley identity established the principle that an existing personality should remain visible after joining IHG.

Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok · Bangkok

An early Asian member that helped demonstrate the collection's suitability for contemporary lifestyle hotels rather than only heritage conversions.

Casa da Companhia · Porto

The first European opening, occupying a historic Porto building and demonstrating the collection's heritage-hotel potential.

Dinso Resort & Villas Phuket · Phuket

A resort expression that moved Vignette decisively beyond urban conversions and into tropical leisure.

RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka · Osaka

A major Japanese institutional hotel brought into the collection while retaining its established local name and history.

THE BARAI / Japan & new global additions

The collection's rapid 2025-2026 expansion shows IHG using Vignette as a flexible luxury conversion platform across mature and emerging markets; individual current membership should be checked against the live IHG directory.

The First Hotel

Hotel X Brisbane had opened shortly before joining Vignette and became the collection's first operating property in December 2021. Its Friday cocktails and DJ programming became the hotel's Memorable Ritual, linking the new collection code to Fortitude Valley's nightlife culture.

Memorable Rituals as Brand Architecture

Most soft brands struggle to create consumer recognition without imposing design standards. Vignette's answer is ritual: the action repeats conceptually while the content changes locally. The guest can expect a ritual but should not know exactly what it will be until arriving.

a Means For Good

The social-impact code asks each hotel to connect with its local community. Current hotel pages show initiatives ranging from education support to local cultural programmes. The World Literacy Foundation partnership provides a wider collection-level framework.

Ihg Journey to Tomorrow

Vignette's responsibility language sits inside IHG's Journey to Tomorrow framework. This corporate layer matters because independent hotels joining the collection inherit group-wide sustainability expectations as well as local charitable commitments.

Ownership Model

The brand is corporate — IHG Hotels & Resorts — while the hotels themselves are generally independently owned assets. Vignette is designed precisely to separate property ownership and identity from the global commercial platform.

Conversion Economics

Conversion brands allow hotel owners to avoid the cost and identity loss of a complete hard-brand transformation. IHG gains rooms faster than through new-build development, while owners gain distribution and loyalty reach. The pipeline of 45 hotels at March 2026 shows how central this logic has become.

Global Scale

IHG Development reported 34 open Vignette hotels and 45 pipeline hotels at 31 March 2026. That is unusually rapid growth for a brand launched less than five years earlier and places Vignette among the faster-scaling luxury soft brands.

Geographic Range

Current IHG materials show Vignette across urban and resort markets in Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan, Greater China, the Middle East, the Americas and island destinations. The collection is no longer an Australia / Asia experiment.

Design

There is no Vignette design template. The official development proposition explicitly values each property's own design and service style. This protects individuality but places greater pressure on selection standards: the collection must curate quality rather than manufacture it.

Service

Vignette does not use a universal butler or concierge ritual as its master service identity. Service is expected to reflect the individual house while IHG supplies standards and systems behind the scenes.

Food & Beverage

Destination restaurants and bars are common because many Vignette properties are lifestyle-led. Food and beverage can carry local identity more effectively than generic collection branding.

Wellness

Wellness varies by property. Some members are urban hotels with fitness and spa facilities; others are resort or retreat products where wellness becomes central. The collection does not impose one wellness philosophy.

Family

Vignette welcomes families but does not define itself through family travel. Family facilities and connecting rooms vary by property, reinforcing the need to choose the individual house rather than the collection name alone.
