Thompson Hotels

Thompson Hotels began in SoHo in 2001 with 60 Thompson, created by the Pomeranc family's real-estate platform at a moment when New York's boutique-hotel market was still relatively small. The original hotel combined residential-scale design, nightlife, food and a bohemian downtown address into a luxury product that felt less formal than the established uptown hotel world. More than two decades later, Thompson sits inside Hyatt Lifestyle Group and continues to define itself through design, restaurants, bars and cultural connection rather than conventional luxury ceremony.

The Brand

Hyatt describes Thompson as a luxury lifestyle brand and a sophisticated home base where timeless design meets a modern perspective and culture remains part of the conversation. Each hotel is expected to mold into its surrounding community rather than reproduce one visual prototype. Restaurants, rooftop bars, music, art and local creative partnerships are not secondary amenities; they are the mechanisms through which the hotel becomes socially relevant. The brand's corporate path is unusually layered. Thompson grew independently, merged with Joie de Vivre in 2011 to create Commune Hotels & Resorts, later became part of Two Roads Hospitality, and entered Hyatt when Hyatt acquired Two Roads in 2018. In 2019 Thompson became the first former Two Roads brand integrated into World of Hyatt. Today it sits in Hyatt's Lifestyle Portfolio alongside Andaz, The Standard, Bunkhouse and other experience-led brands.

Philosophy

The current Thompson phrase is 'A True Original'. The philosophy depends on meaningful contradictions: classic and contemporary, refined and underground, luxury and informality. Design is described as an ethos rather than a rulebook, allowing individual designers to create layered residential environments rather than follow a rigid global package. The original Pomeranc-era idea already contained much of this logic. 60 Thompson treated the hotel as an intimate cultural address, with design and nightlife capable of creating demand independent of guestrooms. Hyatt has institutionalised that approach through a larger system without abandoning the expectation that each Thompson should feel specific to its city.

What Distinguishes it

Refined edge Thompson sits between polished luxury and downtown cultural energy. It is less formal than a classical luxury flag but more materially and service-intensive than most mainstream lifestyle brands. Design as ethos Hyatt explicitly rejects a design rulebook. Mid-century references, residential layering and local architectural context recur, but sameness is not the objective. Food and nightlife Restaurants and bars are foundational. Rooftops, neighbourhood bars and chef-led concepts are expected to attract locals and give the hotel life beyond room revenue. Culture shifters Thompson uses established and emerging creative talent in art, music, food and cultural programming. The hotel is positioned as a meeting point between traveller and local creative scene. Home base, not stage set Despite the social energy, current brand language emphasises warmth and familiarity. A Thompson should function as a sophisticated home base rather than a nightclub with bedrooms.

Who it is Not For

Thompson is not for travellers seeking palace formality, ceremonial butler service or a completely secluded resort. Public spaces can be busy, restaurants and rooftops socially prominent, and design intentionally visible. Guests who prefer a highly standardised room product should also evaluate individual houses because Thompson's commitment to local authorship produces meaningful variation.

Thompson Rome · Rome A 70-room restored 1930s palazzo near Capitoline Hill, announced for 2026 as the brand's Italian debut and a test of Thompson's contemporary design language inside historic Rome.
