1 · Opening
Amazónico opened in Madrid in 2016 with a rainforest built inside a townhouse: foliage to the ceiling, a jazz room downstairs, and a menu that borrows across Latin America.
2 · Why it matters
The house belongs to a specific contemporary genre — the fully themed luxury restaurant — and executes it at the highest level. Its significance is that theming, once the mark of a lower category, has become a legitimate luxury strategy: guests pay top prices for an environment as willingly as for a kitchen.
It also demonstrates Madrid's arrival as an exporter of restaurant concepts, which is new. The Spanish capital spent decades receiving formats; this decade it has been sending them.
3 · Signature & ritual
The foliage and the fire; churrasco and ceviche in the same menu; the downstairs jazz room as the second act.
4 · What this house does not solve
An immersive set is expensive to build, expensive to maintain and impossible to update without closing.
Theming ages faster than cooking: the room dates while the kitchen does not.
And a menu drawn from a whole continent is a marketing decision rather than a culinary one, which limits how seriously the food can be argued about.
