Contribution to hospitalityThe medically supervised stay as luxury — the ancestor of the longevity retreat

1 · Opening

Henri Chenot built a method before he built houses: a supervised programme of diagnostics, restricted diet, hydrotherapy and treatment, delivered over a fixed number of days.

2 · Why it matters

The Library records the method separately from the houses because the method is what travels. Chenot programmes have been delivered in properties the group does not own, and the two Chenot Palaces (LHL-210 Chenot Palace, LHL-H-484 Chenot Palace Weggis) are its purest expressions rather than its only ones.

Its significance is chronological: Chenot was doing supervised longevity work decades before the word became a market. The medical retreats now recorded in the main register — Lanserhof, SHA, VIVAMAYR, Clinique La Prairie — occupy a category this method helped define, and the treatment houses of this section borrowed its vocabulary of protocol and programme.

3 · Signature & ritual

A stay measured in days rather than hours; diagnostics on arrival; a diet that is part of the treatment; hydro-jet and energetic treatments; the guest leaves with results rather than with a memory.

4 · What this house does not solve

A method that requires medical supervision cannot be delivered by a hotel spa team, which caps how far it can travel — the opposite constraint to Natura Bissé's.

The founder was the method's authority. Since his death in 2020 the group has had to institutionalise a doctrine that was personal ⚑.

And the longevity market it prefigured has been flooded by operators making stronger claims with weaker evidence; a house with genuine clinical discipline now competes against marketing.

“Longevity Before the Word” — Decades before the market discovered longevity, one method was already sending guests home with results rather than memories — and measuring the stay in days.
