Contribution to hospitalityThe engineered superclub: the room designed backwards from the residency

1 · Opening

Hï opened in May 2017 inside the walls that Space had occupied since 1986, under new owners and an entirely different theory of what the room is for.

2 · Why it matters

Space grew outward from a terrace. Hï was specified inward from a booking sheet: the sightlines, the sound, the table plan and the production capacity were all designed around the residencies that would be sold in it, before the first ticket existed.

That is the modern superclub, and it belongs to hotel operators rather than to club people. The house sits under Ushuaïa Entertainment and Palladium, and its authorship runs through LHL-P-059 Abel Matutes Prats & Yann Pissenem — the same register entry that holds the family which owned the building all along.

It is also the register's clearest demonstration that a room and a house are not the same thing. Same walls, same postcode, different code.

3 · Signature & ritual

Two contrasting main rooms under one roof, table service engineered as a floor plan rather than added to one, and a production budget that behaves like a festival stage.

4 · What this house does not solve

A house designed around residencies is a house whose product is other people's names. Fee inflation runs one way, and the leverage sits with the artist.

Engineered rooms age faster than accidental ones. The terrace at Space acquired its meaning over twenty-seven years; a specification cannot be given that by design.

And the club exists inside a hotel group's leisure portfolio, which means its continuation is a capital allocation decision rather than a cultural one.

7 · LHL story

“Same Walls, Different House” — The lease ended, the owners took the room back, and what opened inside it was not the same place under a new name — it was a new place.
